Top Tips

Cars leaving the Royal Welsh Show

Last updated: 20 July 2009

From avoiding the queues to bargain-hunting, regular showgoers have been sharing their secrets on how to survive the Royal Welsh. If you've got a top tip to add, get in touch.

Harriet from Builth Wells sent us this suggestion in July 2009:

Harriet:"Take advantage of the many park and ride car parks put on by the showground - will reduce the pressure on the town and keep your stress levels down!"

Fran Lever from Oxford sent us this tip in July 2009:

Fran:"We are staying in Fforest Fields camp site again this year (as has become our tradition during RW week)and plan to avoid the traffic by cycling to the show ground. It's not too far (just over a couple of miles away) and will help the planet as well. Maybe other will think about doing the same!"

Rhys James from Cardiff shared a tip for keeping cool in July 2006:

"To avoid packed stands, wait to watch the later showings, and if it's a hot day, seeing the later shows mean that it will be cooler as well."

Catherine from Southampton emailed in July 2006 with this advice:

"Watch the Welsh ponies and Cobs even if your not a horsey fan you're soon be won over by there charm!"

Shirley Turner from Sherborne in Dorset is also a Welsh Cob fan:

"If you want to watch the Welsh Cob Stallions on Wednesday afternoon, its best to bag your place nice and early. The arena gets jam packed for this fabulous competition!"

Sam from Wem says repeat performances are worth watching:

"Watch some of the main attractions more than once if you have time, you will always see something different the second time round!"

Rachel from Radnor's advice is to make the most of this four day festival:

Enjoy it, it only comes around once a year! There is always something going on - but watch out for pick pockets.

Rachael Jones from Newtown says you need to be organised:
Plan your day, don't just wander about. I went a few years ago and left to the end all the things I would have enjoyed most so didn't have much time for them.

Andrew from Tywyn says:
1. Wear wellingtons - because it can get incredibly (and ridiculously) muddy.
2. Remember what your car looks like - especially when the bottom half is covered in mud from other cars squelching past.
3. Always buy cheese.

Nia from Ynys Mon:
If you want to avoid queuing for hours in the traffic, arrive early! I try and get there before the show opens at 8.00am. Lots of people take a breakfast picnic with them and eat in the car park before going in to spend the day on the showground.

Lucy Bevan from Llandrindod Wells:
If you're looking for accommodation in the area, I suggest booking well in advance. Once you're at the Show, make sure you don't miss the goat section - it's really out of this world. Another treat is the Flower Tent where the smell is just wonderful - but do try and go on the first or second day because the plants can start to wilt a little towards the end of the Show, especially if it's hot.

(More than 200 goats are competing this year - 151 dairy goats and 50 angora goats)

Alun from Newtown:
Don't rely on being able to use your mobile phone if you lose your mates - the networks' are often jammed because so many other people are trying to do the same things. There are meeting points dotted around the place so your best bet is probably to agree beforehand on which one to regroup at.

Steve from Llanidloes:
Take some folding chairs and make yourself comfortable on the bank overlooking the main ring. If you've got children with you, take plenty to eat and drink (especially baby food) - and don't forget the sunshade for the buggy.

Anna from Aberystwyth:
The showground is always a sun trap. It gets really hot and you see lots of people getting sunburnt so be prepared and take plenty of suntan lotion, lots to drink and a hat!

Elin from Powys:
Go to the stalls on the final Thursday if you can. It's a good time to pick up a bargain because it's the last day of the show and traders are keen to shift stock.
