Horse Tales

Horses in the main show ring Dr Wyn Davies from Ceredigion is one of Wales' most prominent breeder of Welsh ponies. Now one of the main commentators, he and his family have been competing in the show since it first started in 1904...

"My grandmother and grandfather competed against each other in the first Royal Welsh Show in 1904. My father first took part in the show in 1926, winning the Section C Championship in 1928 with Seren Ceulan.

In 1947 - when I was 14 - I won for the first time and in 1949, our family won three of the main prizes.

From the 1970s onwards, we won the Section A progeny competition no less than 11 times - setting a record. I think they eventually stopped the competition because it was becoming a bit predictable!

"My son has taken over the competing side of things now while I concentrate on the ringside commentary. It's an early start at 7.30 in the morning and we don't finish until 7 o'clock at night.

My wife says although she doesn't see me for the duration of the show, she's got to listen to me all day. If there's a sudden silence, she gets a bit concerned that I've keeled over!

The show has developed a lot since it found its permanent home in Builth. During its travelling days you would be lucky to get 20,000 visitors for the whole event whereas these days the crowds reach 200,000". Dr Wyn Davies
