"Now day one of the Show is over and what a day we had where the sun shone beautifully over the fifty three thousand visitors who poured through the gates at Llanelwedd. Apparently there could have been a few more had the park and ride buses gone in the right direction!
Wales YFC had a packed day of competitions including the puppet show, club promotion, circus main ring display, sheep shearing and the first day of the rugby. These competitions were of a very high standard and thoroughly enjoyed by all. From a personal point of view, I would like to congratulate my County of Brecknock for winning the club promotion and the main ring display, however, the competition is hot with Ceredigion leading the way closely followed by the two home Counties of Radnor and Brecknock.
The YFC Club displays were also judged today and the theme was 'That's Entertainment'. It was clear that a lot of work and effort had gone into producing these eye catching designs with Montgomery deservedly taking first place.
It's not just all fun and games at the YFC arena though and some serious discussions were held today about the future of farming with Sir Emyr Jones Parry and Elin Jones , Minister for Rural Affairs. Also on the agenda were the devolution of Wales, renewable energy and single farm payments.
During the day there were many livestock competitions held and the quality of the animals on display was a credit to all the exhibitors involved. The record entries in the sheep and pig sections underline the growing strength of the Show. In the afternoon the cattle ring was packed with spectators for the Supreme Championship of the Beef Breeds with the Limousin cow taking the accolade.
We are now looking forward to another action packed day on Tuesday and hopefully all heads will be clear after tonight's Foam Party at the Young People's Village featuring Dave Pearce, Radio 1 DJ. I hope the forecast is wrong for tomorrow, but just in case bring your umbrella and wellies, however, I am sure the enjoyment will be just the same."
