The jewel of Powys. One of the last few unspoilt places on earth. Safe for children to ramble, cycle, ride their ponies and camp. Dont forget the pony trekking! Kids love it and if mum and dad can be persuaded to join in, they love it too. Easy way of getting right up on the hill tops for fantastic views. Lion Royal Hotel has half and full day treks.

Rhayader I loved. I was born there and my family still live there .I have many cousins in Llandrindod Wells, Builth Wells and we have just had a reunion with 80 cousins from uk and abroad at Caer Beris Manor Hotel on 23rd August 2008. Would Melanie Shortt nee Ward contact me as my great great grandfather was also William Webb born 1829 died 25.8.1877.Samuel Webb was my great great great uncle. William Webb was married to Ann Evens. My mother who is 88 yrs lives next to the eagle by the church.Rhayader was a wonderful place to grow up. I have travelled all over the world Australia, Europe,Middle East, Africa lived in Rome and yet I love returning home to Rhayader. I had a happy school life,I went to Cwdauddwr and Rhayader Primary schools where my father went, been a local boy and my grandfather who was a local business man, as was my father.I now manage to go home once a month and see old friends and family My family on both sides date back to 1801. Spring time in Rhayader-what a beautiful time and the community spirit you can still detect if you so desire.

Just spent a week with the family in Rhayader - I'm related to Mel Shortt (comments below) and David Ward. It truly is a beautiful place and I've loved visiting and finding more out about our family tree.

I adore Rhayader. My mum was born in the Elan Valley area and also lived in Rhayader. My brother David has bought and lives in a cottage which my mother lived in called Ffynnon Fair, mum's sister Dorothy, was born there and her grandmother Sarah Webb died there. Mum was Mary Bray. I have been researching the family tree and my Great Great Grandfather was William Webb who was a Cooper in Rhayader and mentioned in 1841 Census to 1871 Census. His son, my Great Grandfather, Samuel Webb, was a gamekeeper and husband of Sarah Webb. I have traced him to 3 estates, 1. Woodlands 1881 Census, 2! . Bryntirion Lodge 1891 Census and Ochrcefn 1901 Census. My brother David, although born in Coventry has told me it feels as though he has come home now he lives in Rhayader. He is an artist which he teaches in the area. My dream is to retire to Rhayader as I also will feel as though I have come home.

continuation...Now it is all coming back to me after some 45 years !What I particularly remember is the beautiful singing by the lads during the working day at the factory. When the local Eistedfordd was held I was away. Upon my return I asked how our lads had done. It transpired that they were the last to perform and by that time they had 'had quite a few' and their performance was badly affected ! They lost...Business visitors often brought their rods and would pop down to the Wye beside us whilst the boys kept a watch out from the factory windows !Some of the boys were in the church cho! ir, and morningsong was a delight. We all met in the Eagle afterwards (of course). We took the children to watch the local 'One man and his dog' events. The farmers' language when giving commands to the dogs was something to experience ! The children were quite impressed !! The adjectives were more anglo saxon than Welsh !!Those were the days !!!!!

I lived and worked in Rhayader for a short period. When I arrived in 1963 I was given a 34lb salmon by some of the lads at work.Poached of course. Later two of them were fined for tickling fish in the Wye. However, it was OK as the Magistrate bought the fish so they could afford the fine. The winter of 1963/4 was quite something. During an interval at the cinema there, I fell over badly in the Gents which had solid ice everywhere ! The water mains froze as did the factory septic tank. Sheep came into the town to feed and RAF helicopters dropped food for the rest. Mr Beeching had just removed the railway%! 20tracks so we were unable to get out of the town. The Wye was almost frozen over, and an evening visit to the Eagle Inn required a ''dICEy'' walk !Even more so on the way back home !! If any of the young lads caused a disturbance in the little cinema the film would be stopped whilst the usherette gave them a dressing down ! Usualy the same boys ! Being a wet County, the Cardys came at weekends and the boys at work had black eyes on Monday morning from protecting their girls -and had enjoyed it !! I never tried the marathon of having a drink at each of the twelve (?) pubs.

I read the above comments with absolute disbelief. I lived in Rhayader for years and I hated the place. It was narrow minded and mean minded... Who all these friendly people are I can't imagine, it must have changed an awful lot since I was there that's all I can say. I couldn't wait to leave.

After an idyllic childhood living at Bryntirion, Rhayader I left, like many youngsters need to, to seek my fortune. After 15 years in Liverpool, Gloucester and Shropshire I came back to the town which has been home to my family for at least 250 years. I am SO proud to be a native of this wonderful place and so thrilled to have brought up my three daughters in such a safe, friendly beautiful environment.

There's always some fine rain around Rhayader even so it never seemed to stop the old boys from lounging against the walls of the shops at the crossroads by the clock - day in day out they'd be there seeing what was going on - it was probably a lot more fun than daytime tv.You could go past in the morning on the way to Aber and they'd still be there when you came back.

First came to Rhayader & the Elan Valley with my parents in 1959,I cycled down from Leeds with a friend.Came many times over the years till 1997 when I came to live here with my family.Having lived all over the country I can say it realy is the best place there is & providing you are willing to get involved there is plenty to do for all ages.Forget going abroad as this place has no equal for sights, friendly people, great schools, good pubs & quality of life.

Thanks Emma for your info, not sure if it is the same Hughes family but we did have relatives that lived in the Pant-y-dwr area, I have recently gathered from a very good source in Rhayader that my ancestor; William Hughes born 1786, came from Llanfiangel y Creuddyn (Cardiganshire) to Abergwngu Elan Valley in 1838. His parents were Wiliam Hughes who married Elizabeth Williams at Hafod on 25.6.1784! Hope this is of interest to you and I would also like to thank Mr Geoff Robert from Fargie and also Mr Richard Hughes from Rhayader for the help which they have given me.

Attention Hugh Lewis, Llanidloes. We have traced our family tree back and we are related to a John and Margaret Hughes who lived at 11 East Street, Rhayader. One of the Hughes was a drover and made it as far as blaena and opened a butchers shop. We haven't got any further yet, but I know there were more Hughes' up St Harmon, but I don't know if these are the same family.

I was introduced to Rhayader when I met my husband Gareth. His family had a cottage in Church Street. First saw the market town one cold winters day when it was covered in snow! What a view. It's a warm and friendly place and 30 years later it's still the same. Due to family illness we no longer have the cottage but we have taken the family back this week to visit old friends after 3 years and the town hasn't changed (thank god). A great place and hope to go back soon.

During 1974 a girlfriend and I were enjoying a coach tour of Wales. During one evening the tour enjoyed watching the local Rhayader choir entertain its audience with some splendid singing for which Wales is famous. I was born in Llanhilleth, Gwent, during 1944, but moved to London a few years' later so that my father could find work other than that in the local pit. So listening to the above choir was an awakening for my Welsh soul - would this be the Hiraeth?

Rhayader is the little town where I grew up in the 1940's.I went to the infant school in Cwmdauddwr and Bryntirion secondary modern, they were happy days.We as children during school holidays would go picking wimberies and climb Gwasteddyn mountain carrying a small rock to build the peak on the top it was great fun during the long summer holidays combined with paddling in the River Wye,we were never bored and found plenty to do with our time. I left Rhayader in the 1950's to find work, I have shown Rhayader and the Elan Valley to my family to let them see what a beautiful part of mid-Wales Rhayader is. They were all very impressed and could not understand why one ever moved from Rhayader. I looking forward to coming back to visit again in the near future.

I'm interested in Rhayader because my mother and my elder brothers and sisters were evacuated to the village in 1941 when their home in Bootle was bombed. They stayed with a Mrs. George. I'd much appreciate it if anyone has any memories of evacuees to Rhayader.

I have lived in Rhayader all my life. When i was growing up i went to youth club most nights, it was great fun we also had a disco on a regular basis i now have children of my own and find i have to travel as the youth club doesnt run that often and discos are very limited it is a great shame as so many teenagers are so bored. But it has always been a friendly place to live and i hope it doesnt change.

It is one of the few places in the country which is totally classless. It is a wonderful place to have lived, brought up children and retire to. Unfortunately its very qualities mean young people tend to leave and work away. Hopefully they will return or remember Rhayader with fond memories having had the very best of upbringing.

Beautiful country to walk in and see lots of wildlife. The town is good for elderly and disabled people, but not so good for teenagers and young people as there is little to do for them. We look forward to the summer when it is the best place in the world to live and work.

My family have been camping in Rhayader for over ten years. On the drive up on the A470 we can feel ourselves relaxing the nearer we get to Rhayader. We love the town with the clock in the middle where there is no apparent right of way for cars, everyone just gives in to the other driver. One resident told me she thought they should instal traffic lights at the junction.....Please, please don't do that, you will spoil the atmosphere of this gorgeous place. We always leave with regret but know that very soon Rhayader will call us back again.

What a lovely area to visit and stay. My wife and I have visited many times, especially on the bike. The top roads above the town and valley are awesome. We both wish the residents and CARAD all the very best with your museum project and insist as rate payers of Birmingham that the mayor listens and offers financial support to the project. Thankyou Rhayader. Anthony & Annette St Michaels Vicarage Hall Green

I try to get to Rhayader as often as I can. As it is only 80 miles from where I live and a beautiful drive there I have no reason to go any less. I feel a sense of relief when I'm driving there as it's a step back in time on the quiet roads and when we are there, it really is a cosy warm town with a friendly atmosphere. It's a town which is very dear to my heart, laid back, clean, safe and very enticing after each visit I make. All I can say I will be back...time after time and what fantastic scenery!

I was brought up in the Elan Valley area and went to the now closed Elan Valley school. The Elan Valley reservoirs was very much part of my life with the connections with Birmingham City Council when the Mayor came down to visit us and we provided him with entertainment in the form of a concert. Over the years I have also always been drawn back to Rhayader to either visit family members or for recreation purposes. I am always impressed with the continuity of community spirit and old fashion friendliness. 40 year ago when I was a child we had events to look forward to throughout the summer months i.e. carnival week, etc. I have read some of the comments from younger people on your webpage and can I say to those young people that if they are bored now they should have lived in Rhayader 40 years ago when we didn't have a swimming pool and leisure centre, we swam in the river, only the milk bar to go to socialise with friends and there was no visitors centre or trails to hike or mountain bike on in the Elan Valley. You have it made in Rhayader today and may it always continue.

I have lived in Rhayader all my life (nearly 49 years) and have learnt over the years how to represent Wales with the fly rod with the support of not only my father but friends also. All in all I've represented Wales on numerous occasions inc 1980 and 1981 when I was national champion in amongst disabled anglers and in 1983 captained the Welsh disabled fly fishing team to 3rd position defeating the host team Ireland.

Hi Simon. Thanks for the message. We hope to launch a fishing mini site in the future so if you'd like to contribute or make any suggestions, please email us at wales.mid@bbc.co.uk - Mid Wales Web Team.

Rhayader is a fantastic place to live - the community spirit is amazing as everyone knows and looks out for each other. I have lived here all my life and could not imagine living anywhere else (nor would want to, for that matter!) There are many groups, such as Rhayader Players, Girl Guides Association etc, that provide fun and entertainment for residents and visitors to the town. Also we have Rhayader division of the St John's ambulance - without which, Rhayader and the surrounding towns and villages would be at a huge loss, as many events would not be able to take place without their fabulous first aid cover. I am very proud to be representing the town as Carnival Queen this year (2005), and hope that you will all visit the town on Carnival Day (16th July), and pray for sunshine!!

I visit Rhayader often having family living there and I think it's a great little town situated in a superb setting! A good park for the kids, nice camp sites, good shops and loads of walks.

Rhayader is ok 2 live in when your older but 4 us kids there is nufin 4 us 2 do. I've lived here 4 about 6 years and 4 5 of them i've been bored out my mind. The most dat we can do is go 2 the sports centre 2 go swimming, play pool/snooker,go 2 the gym or just hang around. We have a youth club twice a week as well so thats ok. But if u like all that countryside and going 4 long walkes in the open then liveing here is 4 you.

Rhayader is an unique place, it's different but very friendly. It had good local facilities - the crown pub is a friendly traditional pub, and the carnival is tremendous, first class.

Rhayader is a very friendly little town. You come into town and people say hello and have a chat. It's a nice place to bring up children. It's safe, people know who you are and we watch out for each other. There's a real community spirit about the place.

Rhayader is a very nice place to live because I'm allowed to walk home from school on my own and the countryside is fantastic.

Rhayder is a quiet little market town. We're a very friendly community and there's a lot going on, especially during the summer months.
