"How did I get to hear of the Elan Valley, as I am surprised the number of people who say they have never heard of it, including myself.
Well, about 5 years ago a friend and I were on the Merthyr main road when we came across a small dog evidently lost and in danger from the traffic.
We picked it up and took it to the nearest Police Station which happened to be in Aberfan - the Policeman there took charge - and in conversation we told him we were just having a day out around the Valley's.
He couldn't quite understand this, and went on to say how much he liked getting on his motor bike and heading for the Elan Valley which was such a beautiful area.
Thats how I got to hear of it with a few instructions how to get there.
Since those days, with friends at least 4 times a year we have a day out in the Elan Valley, its a round trip of 180 miles but with the en route scenery, the distant mountains & colours the distance seems to go un-noticed, my favourite route is Abergavenny, Crickhowell, Builth Wells and on to Rhayader
Another noticable thing is the peacefulness of the roads very little traffic for a good deal of the journey.
Our first stop normally is the Elan Valley Centre, a mindful of information, about the history of the area - a shop full of memrobillia -and also a very good Cafeteria/Restaurant - although if so you can have your own picnic in the grounds of the centre.
We usually drive around the valley area stopping at various points- taking a few pics and admiring the various scenic views. Whilst I am not a walker, I can appreciate a good many places would appeal for that pastime.
Well ! thats brief story of how my friends and I found the Elan Valley - never get tired of going there. A very beautiful area and so peaceful."
