Ceredigion Reserves

The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales looks after dozens of nature reserves and sites of special interest stretching from Bridgend in the south to Aberystwyth in Mid Wales. Dr Lizzie Wilberforce is one of the trust's conservation officers and she's put together some really useful information to 21 reserves in Ceredigion.

Aberstrincell

This small coastal site near Llanon is home to four large limekilns as well as various shore birds.

Allt Crug Garn

This small reserve near Aberaeron is a piece of relic heathland where ancient heather plants grow.

Allt Pencnwc

Ancient trees, woodland birds and spring flowers can be found in this spectacular reserve in the Aeron Valley.

Caeau Llety Cybi

Four fields of attractive flower-rich meadows with good views across the Dulas valley.

Cardigan Island

The island is home to an important colony of Lesser Black-Backed Gulls but you'll need a special permit to visit.

Coed Maidie

Look out for herons and during the summer months, a range of butterflies can be seen on this reserve near Cardigan.

Coed Penglanowen

Cross a stream used by otters over an elfin bridge and see Ceredigion's tallest tree at this Rhydyfelin reserve.

Coed Simdde Llwyd

This ancient woodland in Cwm Rheidol is home to many woodland birds like pied flycatchers and wood warblers.

Cors Ian

The rare water vole can be found on this beautiful reserve which offers great views across Cwm Ystwyth.

Cwm Clettwr

Spectacular flowering heather and gorse in late summer as well as views across Cors Fochno to the sea.

Llyn Eiddwen

A natural lake in the Ceredigion hills where waterfowl such as tufted duck and whooper swan spend the winter.

Llyn Fanod

A site of special scientific interest near Bontnewydd, popular with dragonflies during the summer.

Old Warren Hill

You can see the remains of an Iron Age Hillfort here as well as the holes of an extensive badger sett.

Pant Da

A strong songbird community thrives in this small reserve in Cwm Rheidol which is also used by badgers.

Penderi Cliffs

Steep coastal slopes with breeding seabirds and seals, and an unusual 'hanging' oak woodland.

Pennar Fawr

A spectacular expanse of purple moor grass where wild orchids flower during the summer.

Rhos Fullbrook

The reserve contains a stream, wet woodland and damp 'rhos' pasture where insectivorous plants grow.

Rhos Glandenys

Wet, species-rich grassland which is special for its orchids during early summer.

Rhos Glyn yr Helyg

Look out for Marsh fritillary butterfly in early summer, along with otters, dragonflies and reed bunting.

Rhos Pilbach

An attractive mixture of wet grassland, heathy areas, woodland and gorse scrub near Cardigan.

Rhos y Fforest

A very small area of protected grassland near Llanilar with restricted access.
