A wood of ancient origin where bluebells, dog's mercury, wood anemones, sanicle and early purple orchids create a stunning display in spring.
Much of this woodland reserve is probably of ancient origin.
Ash dominates, with Pendunculate Oak, Downy Birch and Rowan. Wych Elm remains as dead or decaying trees.

Also of note are Adders-tongue Fern, Common Twayblade and Broad-leaved Helleborine.
The reserve is rich in birdlife with many breeding species, and it supports some nationally scarce lichens.

Admission Charges Admission is free but donations are welcome.
Location Penybont
Directions Take the A44 W from Penybont. Cross the Ithon and take the 2nd turn L. After about 400m there is a track on the L. Park on the road verge before the track. Access is via a permissive path. Go down the track for about 25m and where there are two gates together on the R, go through the right-hand gate. Keeping the field boundary on your L, cross two fields. Shortly after entering the 3rd field, go through the gate on your L. The reserve entrance is close by on your R.
