Rhayader Tunnel

Rhayader Tunnel. Photo by James Blair

Last updated: 14 August 2007

Four species of bat hibernate in the old railway tunnel (no access), while grasslands and woods shelter treasures like wood bitter-vetch and broad-leaved helleborine.

The reserve consists of the disused railway tunnel (no access), the deep cuttings at each end, and two small meadows.

Daubenton's Bat, Long-eared Bat, Lesser Horseshoe Bat and Natterer's Bat hibernate in the tunnel.

There are a number of interesting plants, including Wood Bitter-vetch, Broad-leaved Helleborine and Prickly Sedge, and some rare lichens.
