Pennar Fawr

Dr Lizzie Wilberforce from The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales is responsible for 21 nature reserves in Ceredigion. Here's her guide to Pennar Fawr, a site of special scientific interest near Cardigan.
| Designation: | Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) |
| Nearest town/village: | Plwmp near Cardigan |
| Site Grid Reference: | SN368535 |
| Access Point(s): | SN369537 |
| Directions: | Turn towards the coast at the small crossroads on the A487 just north east of Plwmp. Take the second left, and the reserve entrance is less than 100m down this lane. |
| Parking: | A small gated car park area. |
| Access: | There are no footpaths, though visitors are welcome to wander. The terrain is extremely uneven and strong footwear is essential. Not at all suitable for limited mobility. |
| Description: | This large site is a spectacular expanse of purple moor grass and heathy vegetation that includes, in summer, the waving white heads of cotton grass and a number of orchids. Willow, birch and alder grow around the site and small saplings appear occasionally in the grassland. A small stream drains through the site. |
| What to go and see: | A good site for enthusiastic botanists. Snipe can be seen on the site in the winter and the reserve is good for butterflies and moths (eg Emperor moth caterpillars). |
