Parc Natur Penglais in Aberystwyth was declared a nature reserve by Ceredigion County Council in 1995. It was the county's first nature reserve and is the only UNESCO Man and Biosphere urban reserve in Wales.
The reserve stands on the site of a disused quarry and has always been a favourite secret playing place for local children.
Public footpaths lead you through the reserve's woodlands where oak, sycamore, sweet chestnut, cherry ash and scots pine grow.
During the Spring, the woods are carpeted with bluebells and other flowers.
Blackcaps and Jays can sometimes be seen and Redwings visit during the winter months.
There are some lovely views across Cardigan Bay, the harbour and the town itself from the Aberystwyth Panorama viewpoint which was built in 1992. There's also a picnic area and several benches have been placed along the route if you want to take a breather
You can enter the reserve via the public footpath which starts in North Road in town or on Penglais Hill itself, opposite the entrance to the University campus.
Local people, along with the council, have carried out a lot of the work and new volunteers are always being sought. If you want to lend a hand, email us at wales.mid@bbc.co.uk.
