Llyn Eiddwen

Llyn Eiddwen

Last updated: 11 September 2007

Dr Lizzie Wilberforce from The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales is responsible for 21 nature reserves in Ceredigion. Here's her guide to Llyn Eiddwen, a site of special scientific interest near Trefenter.

Designation: Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), National Nature Reserve (NNR)
Nearest town/village: Trefenter
Site Grid Reference:SN6076747
Access Point(s):SN607675
Directions: Take the second left turning from the B4576 as you come south through Llangwyryfon. Continue through Trefenter until you see Llyn Eiddwen in front of you and to the right.
Parking: There is limited off-road parking by the cattle grid at the north east corner of the lake.
Access: Access is on foot across common land to the north, or via bridleway at the south. It is advisable to contact the Trust before visiting (01239 621212) if you wish to leave the public right of way, as the reserve boundary is not fenced and some of the terrain is extremely wet and difficult to walk. Not suitable for wheelchairs.
Description: This natural lake is a good example of upland, clean and low-nutrient water. It is home to a number of locally rare water plants. The attractive surrounding common land is grazed mainly by sheep. The threatened water vole uses the lake's banks.
What to go and see: Winter waterfowl such as tufted duck and whooper swan. Records in recent years also include Black throated diver and Green-winged teal.

Information supplied by Dr Lizzie Wilberforce from the South West Wales Wildlife Trust.

This has to be one of Ceredigion's hidden treasures. A fantastic place to visit, superb views, hardly anyone around and peace and quiet.

I have visited Llyn Eiddwen several times over the past 35 years. It's a magical place with memories of family picnics as well as quiet contemplation. Now I've heard about the pike and that several local anglers use it, especially for the fly. I look forward to trying it this winter. I have also heard about plans to clear the lake and stock it with trout again. How likely is this?

You are allowed to fish in the lake, as long as you follow the countryside code, for example please take bait away with you! As far as I know there are only pike in the lake, and few of them at that. Please contact the Wildlife Trust before fishing.

Is it true you are not allowed to fish in the lake?
