Cors Ian

Cors Ian

Last updated: 11 September 2007

Dr Lizzie Wilberforce from The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales is responsible for 21 nature reserves in Ceredigion. Here's her guide to Cors Ian near Lledrod, which was created in memory of a former Aberystwyth student.

Designation: Wildlife Trust Reserve
Nearest town/village: Lledrod
Site Grid Reference:SN673695
Access Point(s):SN696669
Directions: Turn inland from the A485 at Lledrod. Fork left after 600 m and then turn left again after 2 km. The reserve in on the right, 800 m down this lane.
Parking: Off-road parking at reserve entrance.
Access: Access is by public footpath from the reserve entrance. Suitable for fairly limited mobility, but the ground may be wet and rather uneven.
Description: This beautiful reserve was bought by Marlene Matthews in memory of her son, Ian Cowpertwait, who was a student at the university in Aberystwyth. It is home to a strong population of the highly-threatened water vole. The reserve is grazed by horses and sheep to maintain the attractive wet, rushy vegetation which contains areas of mossy valley mire. There is also a steep gorsey hillside which provides spectacular views north towards Cwm Ystwyth. Walkers may occasionally disturb hares in the long grass.
What to go and see: A spectacular hornbeam grows in the bank of the green lane. Small pearl bordered fritillaries and a number of dragonflies and damselflies use the damp rushy vegetation in summer. In the winter hen harriers and snipe are often on the reserve.

Good advice, which has been taken! Laminated maps are now available to guests at Brynarth.

Visited January 4 from nearby Brynarth guest house. Supports for road side sign have rotted through and sign needs replacing. Is it possible to get hold of a map showing the boundaries of the reserve?
