The two Cefn Cenarths are fine examples of acid sessile oak woodland typical of uplands in Mid Wales.
They have recently been linked by the purchase of conifer woodland at Cwm yr Ychen.
Over a period of years the conifers will be removed and the whole hillside restored to oak woodland.
The two Cefn Cenarths have similar habitats and species. Sessile Oak of fairly uniform age dominates, interspersed with Rowan and Birch.
The reserves are particularly rich in lower plants, and contain rare species of mosses and lichens.
Breeding birds include Pied Flycatcher, Wood Warbler, Redstart, Spotted Flycatcher, 3 species of Woodpecker, Tawny Owl, Coal Tit, Nuthatch, Treecreeper, Song Thrush, Mistlethrush, Bullfinch, Greenfinch, Garden Warbler, Jay and Wren.

Location Near Pant-y-dwr
Directions Take the B4518 from Rhayader N towards Llanidloes. At Pant-y-Dwr turn L along a minor road just before leaving the village. Bear sharp L at the junction with a track. About 1 mile from Pant-y-Dwr there is a lay-by on the R with limited parking; the entrance to Cefn Cenarth South is a few hundred yards further on the R. For Cefn Cenarth North continue a little further along the minor road to reach a very sharp bend to the L; here take the forestry track directly in front of you. Park in one of the two lay-bys up the track on the R; the reserve entrance is about ¼ mile from the start of the track. A trail has been marked out around Cefn Cenarth North, but both reserves are very steep and access is difficult.
