Carngafallt
Last updated: 26 March 2008
Carngafallt is an RSPB reserve and is open at all times. The reserve is a mixture of woodland, moorland and farmland and attracts a variety of wildlife.
Every year, many woodland birds from Africa return to Carngafallt to breed - the Pied Flycatcher, the Redstart, the Willow Warble and the Wood Warbler among them. They tend to arrive mid April and one of the best times to visit is during the breeding season in May when the woods are alive with the sound of birdsong.
By the middle of June, the breeding season is over and the woods are quiet again - but there's still plenty to see and do here.
Set in the middle of Kite Country, the reserve has a number of resident Red Kites as well as Peregrines, Sparrowhawks and Buzzards.
In the summer months, look out for different varieties of moth such as the day-flying Emperor and Northern Eggar moths which can be seen over the moorland. Also, the dark green Fritillary butterfly along woodland edges.
As summer turns to autumn, Fieldfares and Redwing feed on the reserves abundance of wild berries.
In winter, the call of the Red Grouse can be heard at dawn and flocks of Long-Tailed Tits and Siskins can be seen in the woodlands.
The reserve has two way-marked trails:
Cwm yr Esgob Trail which starts at the north-east end of Elan Village and is a mile (1.6km) long Dyffryn Wood Trail which starts from the layby, less than a mile (1.2km) south of Rhayader on the A470. It's two miles (3.2km) long and steep in parts.
Note that Carngafallt doesn't have a visitor centre or other facilities such as toilets.
