Cardigan Island
Last updated: 25 March 2008
Dr Lizzie Wilberforce from The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales is responsible for 21 nature reserves in Ceredigion. Here's her guide to Cardigan Island.
| Designation: | Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). |
| Nearest town/village: | Gwbert near Cardigan. |
| Site Grid Reference: | SN165515 |
| Parking: | N/A. |
| Access: | RESTRICTED: Permit only. Phone 01239 621212. |
| Description: | The island is home to an important colony of Lesser Black-Backed Gulls. Seabirds like Guillemots, Razorbills, Cormorants and Fulmars also nest on the cliff faces. The island is grazed all year by Soay sheep, and grey seals breed on the rocky cliff bases. In early summer you can see the blue haze of bluebells from the mainland. |
| What to go and see: | Although there is no access to the site, there are good views from Cardigan Island Farm Park (Gwbert, Ceredigion) and Cemmaes Head, another WTSWW reserve in Pembrokeshire (SN132500). From Cardigan Island Farm Park you can see the seabirds with binoculars in early summer. |

I have been puzzled for some time now as to what the markings are on Cardigan island ?Was this little island lived on in the past and those markings some sort of buildings outlines or enclosures for animals or maybe some sort of industrial workings ?Has this little island ever been explored/excavated by archaeologists in the past and what did the find ?Any one know anything about Cardigan island and its history as I can't find any information what so ever.
