Snows of 1982

Pentrerhedyn Street in Machynlleth during the big snows of 1982 In January 1982, Mid Wales experienced some of the worst snowstorms this century. Towns and villages were cut off, power lines were down and there was severe drifting.

I was born in January 13th 1982 in Treddol It took the ambulance 4 hours to reach us and 6 hours to move myself and my mother to Bronglais Hospital in Aberystwyth. I was nicely tucked up warm in ambulance coats and turkey foil!!!! What a way to come in to the world eh?!!!

It was -15 0C at mid day in our porch. We got a week off school and spent the whole time sledging it was brilliant. Most of the children of Rhayader were on the hill past Bryterion. Even at 14 I knew that this was something special that would probably never happen again.

I wish i was there. My mum and dad were there but I wasn`t. My dad can remember when he woke up he looked out the window and it was covered with snow it was up to the stop signs.my aunti and my dad went down pendine hill on a sledge he says it was wicked in those times.

I wish i was there! sounded awesome with all that snow! but i can imagine how difficult it was to live in those conditions and to work around them. My parents were there during this, and the only reason im commenting on this is because it snowed last night and is quite bad, but no where as bad as 1982.

It was a magical experience to look outside my farmhouse bedroom window and discover that both the cars were completely buried in snow. We had to walk through ten foot snow-drifts to get to the the local shops some five miles away. Memories!!!

I remember waking to find the snow drifted half way up the windows! Spending all day digging through 6ft of snow with my father to get out to the fields to check for burried sheep! But most of all the 1.5m walk to work and the frozen feet! It seemed to last for ever.

(but her heart is in Llandrindod Wells) I remember opening the backdoor and climbing up the snowdrift to walk across the garden and hedges to the field at the back of our house. Our cat followed, jumping from one footstep to another disappearing each time. Happy memories!

I remember waking up and the snow was as high as the ground floor window sills of our house, I also remember school being closed and having to walk to the dairy to fetch milk as no cars could move.the most i remember was how everyone helped eachover through the bad weather

I am the one of the sons of the woman who was airlifted from Machynlleth on January 9th 1982, as remembered by Maureen Hughes. Does anyone have any more memories/photographs/newspaper clippings?

I remember the cars on my street were completly submerged under snow drifts, all that was visible were gently undulating white slopes. The drifts were touching bedroom window-sills in parts of Dowlais. Those conditions prevailed for an entire month.

I remember Aberystwyth harbour being frozen over. The prom was completely blocked and there was snow covering the beach to the water line. Children were coming down Great Darkgate Street (Aber's main shopping street) on sledges!
