The ruin of the first hydro-power station in Wales was initially established to try and reopen the Frongoch and Weymyss Mines by a company from Belgium at the turn of the twentieth century. There was a Pelton-type wheel capable of producing 300 kilowatts of electricity in the building and this was powered by water from a reservoir above the site and over the road. Around 270 people worked at the mine but by 1903 it had closed:
