Vessel of Distinction

Last updated: 22 October 2009

Gwyn:This poem is dedicated to "Mountain Lass" Brigantine 112 tons. She was built in Aberaeron 1849 by John Harries Jnr. (Shôn Harri bach) 1824-1872 and Henry Harries 1815 - 1892.

The 17th January 2008 sees the launch of a project to build a full size working replica of Mountain Lass in Aberaeron.

Manufactured by hand, guided by eye,
On a beach exposed to the sea and the sky,
Under shipwright and craftsmen, a blacksmith, a rigger,
Nautically sound and crowned with her figure.

Tarred and masted, caulked and varnished,
Adorned with chandlery of brass untarnished,
In ancient times the mode was robust,
No plastic or Kevlar, no fuel to combust.

Launched from the stocks to the rising surf,
A vessel of distinction, by quay or at berth,
Sailors aboard weather salt and spray,
Sail across oceans, anchor's aweigh!

Born in Aberarth , both my great grandfathers lived in Aberaeron and were ships captains, this has led me to try and recreate some of the ships built in both places . I have built my impression of the Mountain Lass to scale andd found the paintings of her contained much artistic licence and they could not be of the ship as she was, I'm very interested in any project to build a replica , is anything happening in that direction . And God said unto Noah, 'Make thee an ark of gopher wood. And behold I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth,.....and thou shalt come into the ark, thou and thy sons and thy wife and thy sons' wives with thee. ...... to keep them alive with thee.'
