I saw an otter in the Rheidol in Aberystwyth (by the playing fields upstream of Parc y Llyn) today (3.1.09) - watched it fishing for about ten minutes. Never seen one before in the flesh in all my 53 years, including the last 15 years walking in & around Abeystwyth. A magical experience. My question is - are they becoming more common in Ceredigion?

I have only visited Constitution hill in Aberystwyth a few times but i have seen an abundance of wildlife there. I have seen six species of Crow including Chough and Raven, as well as Kestrel, Peregrine, Stonechat, Wheatear and Goldcrests in the pine forest. I have also seen other species i have nt been able to identify.

Sounds like it may have been a lesser spotted male woodpecker.

On Boxing Day (2006), I went for a walk along the River Teifi between Llechryd Bridge and Cilgerren Castle. After about half a mile, I spotted a young otter who had just caught a small fish. I watched it for about 20 minutes playing with the fish as a cat does with a mouse. I had my camera but as the batteries were low and the memory nearly full I was only able to film about 3 seconds worth of footage. This has taught me to check camera before I set out. The otter did not seem to be at all bothered by me and I had my dog with me who although is very well-behaved and just sat with me watching the otter, I was still surprised how carefree the otter was in our presence. I was not concealed at all and I know the otter knew we were there. I left it after 20 mins or so to continue its fishing and after only a few hundred yards, spotted a much bigger otter who was not up for any sort of show for me as he dived down deep into the river and I did not see it resurface. I have been walking this part of the river 2 -3 times a year for over 25 years and this is the first time I have seen the otters and it is a memory I shall keep for a long time.

Coming out of Breacon on the Abergavenny road just after the Ford pub in a farm entrance on the right in June 2005, sighted a bird about the size of a robin. Black with red crest and breast. Can anyone tell me the name?
