Rod Williams from Talgarth has had a lifelong interest in fossils. He's sent us a selection of photos from his collection, showing some of his finds from the Black Mountains.

Following the comment by Jason Holmes, I would be interested to know where in the Rheidol Gorge, is it a good place to look for fossils? I personally have no formal qualification in geology, but I have had an interest in fossil hunting since childhood and have learnt a lot from my grandfather who studied geology. I adore fossil hunting, and I often find that the only places I know of are miles away from Aber. It would be really nice to find somewhere near-by where I can take a stroll and fossil hunt at the same time.

This isnt the same but when i was a young lad growing up in we used to find a lot of what looked like clay pipes in the fields below the park woods - on the talgarth side - and also a lot of broken china deposits. does anyone know why?

I have found a few fossils on the banks of the River Wye, near Erwood

When I was at Aber Uni studying Geology, we often went into the Rheidol Gorge, there are some famous fossil sites there for orthocods, graptolites and trilobites, somtimes still go back when im on leave, amazing place. Also worth seeing is the Aberystwyth Grit series, although not overly fossiliferous, great to see the alternating black/white (well light grey) sequences heavily folded and folded through time.
