School Reunion

Photograph of Gregynog Hall In 2006 it will be fifty years since the last grammar school entry to the old school on Newtown Road. David Jandrell got in touch to tell us about a reunion to celebrate the anniversary.

"September 1956 saw the last grammar school entry to the old school on Newtown Road. On 9th September 2006 those of us who are still around will celebrate that 50th anniversary with a reunion at Gregynog Hall. If you don't already know about it, and are interested, do contact me, David Jandrell, on 01694 724531. I look forward to seeing you there."

I was in the last group that entered the Boys Grammar School in September 1956, and the last Head Prefect or the Boys High School and the first Head Boy of the Combined High School in April 1964. I was not contacted for the 2006 reunion but was invited to the High School 50th reunion.

I am disappointed I missed you Barbara at the reunion.I remember being Coffee Monitor and was quite surprised to find all the teachers laughing and joking in the staff room, like you I then realised they were quite different people outside the classroom.

Yes the reunion was lovely. Joyce Bound how did I miss seeing you there. I often laugh when I think of Miss Phillips. It was my job to run down to the Baptist schoolroom wth my satchel dump the books and then go like fury to Paynes to pick up chelsea buns. One fatal day I got caught by Miss Phillips and thought I would really be told off but to my amazement she asked to be on the list for the daily bun feast. Then I was promoted to scramble her eggs at lunch time. Getting to know her through this period I learnt that she was a kind and lovely person not at all as we all perceived in class.

Thanks to everyone who organised the Reunion at Gregynog Hall. I had a fantastic day, met up with lots of old friends some I hadn't seen since leaving School in 1944.

To Glyn Nutting. Yes I do remember your Father, Ted Nutting of Glanrhyd. About 1940 myself and 2 or 3 friends from school would go to Glanrhyd and look after you and I think you had a younger sister while your Mother did some of the outside work on the farm.

I was at Newtown Grammar School from 1951 until 1956, having moved to Newtown with my parents and sister and brother, from London. (My sister Mavis and my brother Michael also attended Newtown Grammar School later on). I was married in Newtown in 1959 and now live in Rio de Janeiro Brasil. I had 6 children, all married now, and I have 24 grandchildren who are always asking me about my schooldays - so long ago and different from nowadays! So I am trying to write a book on the subject!

Attended Newtown BGS 1952-4. Mr Lewis was Head, ED Jones-Evans taught welsh, Ken Williams physics, 'Gubby'Allen chemistry, Eric Savage woodwork and WG Harries french. I still remember 'froggie' Harries declining French verbs when he was 10 yards from our classroom door-he frightened me but I did learn my French! I met him subsequently after he retired and had returned to LLanelli. He was President of Llanelli Rugby Club. What a lovely man.
