Phoenix Community Scheme

Phoenix furniture

Last updated: 21 January 2009

Newtown-based Phoenix Community Furniture Scheme collects donated furniture and household effects including electrical items throughout Montgomeryshire and down to Howey in north Radnorshire. David Birch, scheme manager, explained more about the project in January 2009:

Phoenix is one of the first furniture schemes to open up a showroom in a department store; Pryce Jones of Newtown. This gives the furniture scheme a town centre location making it more convenient for clients to come visit the premises.

The furniture and other goods are checked and tested before being made available to people on low income, state benefits, tax credits and pensions.

A small charge is made for each item that includes free delivery in our trading areas. We also provide training opportunities covering carpentry/joinery and Health & Safety, we are accredited in conjunction with Y.M.C.A College Wales to deliver (O.C.N) Open College Network levels one and two.

We continue to use reclaimed timber.

Following customer demand we opened a sales area of approx 2,300 sq fit in Temple Street Llandrindod Wells, current tonnage figures have increased dramatically from 58 tonnes year end March 2005 to 831 tonnes per year from April 2007 to March 2008.

We are constantly looking at areas where we can help the environment and work towards making Phoenix more sustainable. Late 2006 we achieved an award from employment service "Positive Towards Disability" further recent award Green Dragon level 2 achieved a Highly Commended Award (2007).

For more information you can contact us at Phoenix Community Furniture Scheme at 1st Floor, Pryce Jones, Station Road, Newtown SY16 1BJ. Tel:01686 623336 or Old Tyre Depot Temple Street Llandrindod Wells. Tel: 01597 829295."

They are great. Stuff you don't want goes to a good home. They came round and took away a massive corner sofa that was left by the previous tenant.I will look to them for stuff I need in the future.

Without this project I would be living with, probably, just a bed and a few chairs. They do a wonderful job with great, affordable prices for people on pensions and low incomes especially.
