Linda from Leicester
I'm living in Leicester these days, partly to be with the man of my life and partly for work. We'd both move back to Newtown in an instant if there was decent work available. BTW-NW of Cheshire, you should point out to your other half that the world is full of "Chavs", why would Newtown be exempt from them?!?! Small towns are the same the country over, I know, I worked in a role which took me all over the UK, small towns, large towns and cities, and people can be just as small minded in a large city as can some people have broad minds in small towns! The difference is in the minds of people, not the size of their home towns!!

I grew up in newtown and sometimes there was fun stuff to do but most of the time us teenagers had to entertain ourselves which was not always a good thing!! i moved away from newtown many years ago but do return now and again. All in all its not such a bad place if you survive eating out at a paticular big hotel restaraunt the pubs are great though espeshily the lion i have many fond memories from there and the people from newtown well thay are what make the place so entertaining!

There are plenty of things for kids/teenagers to do. As parents it's your job to get them involved rather than blaming everything else. There's plenty of sports clubs etc. I was born and raised in Newtown and left 6 yrs ago to move to the usa and if I had the chance I would move back tommorow. Newtown is a great community and a beautiful place to live.

When did it go wrong for newtown? in the mid 90's it was thriving, all the pubs were busy every weekend, now its like a ghost town. Good memories from the town I was born and grew up in.

Newtown is where my partner is from, I personally love the town itself, it is surrounded by lovely countryside and beautiful scenery, but the people in Newtown are small minded and not subject to change, it is very behind the times. There are some absolutely great people in newtown but alot of the young are chavs and my partner has always said he wouldnt move back, there is some great people but horrible places in newtown too.

Newtown is a small place to live in, although it's the biggest town in Powys. Speaking as a 15 year old, I find that there is nothing for teenagers to do, and most of us can't even find Saturday jobs because of how small it is here! Everyone wonders why we all go around binge drinking, and acting like chavs, and it's because we don't have anything else to do! And when we do want to do something, we can't because we don't have the resources. e.g I LOVE to sing and I want singing lessons but the nearest, decent place I can go is Shrewsbury and it costs a bomb!! Something needs to be done here for the teenagers, otherwise it's going to get worse!

I moved to Newtown when I was nearly 19, for my first job with Laura Ashleys. I am now 41 and this area has offered me amazing opportunities in my life. I have watched it change and grow, and have no desire to live anywhere else. If your wanting to find friends and lots to do, go to Hope Community church, Dolfor Road in Newtown, hip hop trendy!! and excellent band X

Hi to everyone... I lived in Newtown between 1999 and 2000, when I was just 17. It was really quiet and a lovely town to walk around... although it is true that you won't find a lot of exciting things to do there is a special, a fascinating environment to this town and its sorroundings... I'll really love to have the chance to visit Newtown again, have some fish and chips and then take a long and peaceful walk through Gregynog. Cheers to all the welsh people! you got quite a nice country...

I have lived in Newtown for most of my 54 years and have to say that if people cant find anything to do. They are not trying!!! This is the Welsh countryside and you are not going to find any bowling alleys etc but hey look around you at the scenery. Nothing finer. If you move here and don't like it, I aint seen any road blocks on the road back to England!!

Since I came up with the idea of The Pool Card I have met some remarkable people locally and the instancies of this have increased over the last few months. However, so has the amount of times that I hear the word apathy; "I tried to do this but I never got a response people locally can be so apathetic". I feel that the time has come to harness the potential of these people and the unsung heroes that I have also discovered beavering away in the background for the good of our community and unite them all in a common good. Now, I do not have an agenda for this but I do know that%2! 0if we all got together with the community behind us there is nothing that we cannot achieve. So I suggest that we call a meeting of everybody who is inclined, who has given up because they let apathy win, who can make change happen, our leaders, councillors and the every day residents just like me to unite and create a community that works. I know we can do it because I have met the people who will make it happen. If you are interested in making this meeting happen email m.barnes@the-pool-card.co.uk

I think Newtown is a good town. I've lived here for over 30 years. Been a good place to raise a family. One thing I really enjoy is going to church. More amazingly my kids enjoy going too! They have an fantastic youth club at the church, they get 100 plus teenagers every Friday night...

Newtown, A quiet small market town in Mid Wales, Yet it has the record for being the town with the highest number of drink related violent crimes (per head) in Wales and one of the higest in Britain. It is also one of the top 20 areas in britain for Drug use and Drug related crime. and is virtually a no go area on Friday and Saturday nights for normal people.Pro rata, Brixton, Central Glasgow, Newcastle, and even Belfast during the worst of the Northern Ireland troubles were safer places to be!!

Why is it when young people get bored they blame their environment? From my experience when a person is bored it is their own fault. I left Newtown in 1969 and now live in Australia where the weather is fantastic and the beach is a short drive away and I dont know a soul and of course this is my fault and I know that. Start taking the blame for your own boredom and your entire life will change, you have no more or less than anyone else you just have to learn to appreciate what you have and use it to your advantage. Teenagers these days, no matter what they have will still get bored at some time so stop whining because one day you will look back and as miserable as you may think you are now you will remember these days as the time of your life so go out and take a photo and make a memory, that is all you will have one day.

I was in Newtown in Feb of 07. I am from the US, Oklahoma. We are a rather flat part of the country and seeing Newtown with its rolling hills and green fields, even in Feb. It was totally amazing. We loved it. The people were so friendly. So helpful. I loved the help at Morrisons store. I just cant say enough good things about Newtown.

I have lived in Newtown basically my whole life, I moved here when I was 2 and am now 16. I really like newtown, it is situated in an area with such amazing scenery that people ought to appreciate. When people say "there is nothing to do for teens" or something along those lines, it is absolute rubbish. There are loads of things to do! We have a pretty good leisure centre, we have football, cricket, rugby, boxing, tennis clubs and many more also there are a few youth clubs in the town. Young people say they are bored but they really shouldn't be when there is so much to do, if they don't like that sort of thing then surely they have friends or can find something to do, we have more things available to us today than, for instance, our grandparents did. Also I think the shops in the town are ok, perhaps the town could do with a little bit of expansion in terms of shops, if the space can be found, however you can certainly get almost anything you want in Newtown and it is relatively cheap. If not get on the train or bus to shrewsbury or wherever. Newtown is a very good town in my opinion.

The best thing about Newtown is the boxing club. It is on Wednesdays and Mondays ages 11 and over. It is good for self defence, reflexes, fitness and health. I like the Maes y Rhandir youthclub because there are nice staff and they listen to what you say and they sort out problems for you and they entertain you by doing paintballing, and gocarting with Powys extreme.

Tony Roberts, Luxor, Egypt
I lived in Newtown for quite a few years first at Gethin Farm, Aberhafesp and then Bodhyfryd Llanidloes Rd. I used to walk or cycle along the river into the town almost every day, the river in the park is so beautiful and a picture should be on this site. I suffered severely from arthritis, and moved to Luxor Egypt. Now I do not suffer as it never rains here (no humidity) so I can walk for miles. I take walks along the Nile or go sailing on it, but it is nothing compared to the part of the Severn I used to see in Newtown, my wife still lives at Bodhyfryd. A month after we decided to move her mum had a stroke so now she has to look after her and as I was in a wheelchair most of the time she could not cope. That’s how I came to live here in Luxor. I also built a small hotel called myegypt here. And life is ok apart from missing my family and my beautiful homeland of Wales.

I was born in Newtown, I have mostly happy memories of the town. I used to love walking up Bryn bank first thing in the morning, sitting on the hill, nothing near, except a few sheep and looking down on the town as it was waking up. Beautiful.

I think the only problem with Newtown is how you have to stick to the stereotypes. If your a man you go to football and the pubs and get a shop in a farm or factory. If your a girl you get a job in a local shop, farm or factory. No-one in Newtown travels, or even moves out.I'm not saying this is always a bad thing but guys-there is a world out there!
Fri Jun 15 12:47:50 2007

If you have grown up in Newtown you will inevitably have heard many young people proclaim they hate it here. It's not so much the place itself, more the fact that it is not a very happening town for young outgoing people. The town is very stuck in it's ways and is limited for shops and leisure facilities. Some might say that it doesn't seem to move with the times. However you it can be said that this is the whole appeal of Newtown. It is a very beautiful place sitting on the river, surrounded by lovely parks and countryside retreats. Admittedly there isn't enough here to occupy people in the late teens and early 20s but that is why most of them move away to work or leave for University never to return. Having lived here my whole life I would definitely say that it's the kind of town you can probably only appreciate if you are a person of the middle-age or older generation. One thing I can vouch for however is that I had a great childhood and education there and it's always nice to come back and visit once in a while.
Thu Jun 7 15:02:11 2007

There are places for teenagers to go to. The small clubs that are around are out dated, as most of the children come one parent families money is tight, so they hang around the streets and local park, causing trouble. They are bored, they are the future lets give them something to aim for instead of the dole or prison.

My parents retired to newtown six years ago and they love it there! they have very good friends & neighbours, it's a great place to visit, the surrounding area is stunning, i regard newtown as my second home, the people are kind & helpful, knockers of newtown, try living in some rough parts of london or luton, then you would have something to complain about!!
Mon Feb 26 12:48:10 2007

Newtown might not have so many things to do for teens (I'm 15) so that can lead to youths getting in trouble through boredom but Ive lived here my whole life and its my patch, warts and all!

Newtown, it is a good place to live, i've been here for 36 years now. my time in high school was not the best but you get over it. I have a five year old daughter who is has a full schedule through out the week, rainbows on mondays dance lessons on tuesdays wednesday off thursday swimming lessons friday off saturday horse riding and sunday football with newtown white stars, i find it annoying when people say there is nothing for youngsters to do in and around newtown because there is, you just have to look. There is something here for everyone. We could do with a better hospital and a better out of hours doctors service. For a town of this size these service's are very poor, this is where we need a big investment. On the whole i think it's a great place to live and work.

I find newtown and the surrounding areas a very relaxing place with the beautiful countryside a sight to behold after living all my life in the very busy polluted area where traffic jams you encounter any time of the day and life goes to fast so a caravaning break in nearby abermule is like taking a tonic so i only have praise for the area and the slow pace of life and one day would love to come to live near newtown.
Fri Oct 27 09:20:17 2006

Newtown is only good for a weekend visit and thats just to see the countryside, i lived there 9 years and worked in 3 of the biggest places - everyone feels the same there. Nice place to visit, bad place to live. 90% of under 17's are chavs, even walking to town through some estates some kids would throw stones at you then run away. In another estate they throw stones at cars and so on.Nice welcome hey? Roysten Vasey-like but with a deep sense of chavness brought about by kids/teens having Nothing to do until they reach 18 then they can drink in the oh so many pubs. A lot of old people there who talk behind each others backs etc. You only realise how bad the place is till you live somewhere else and especially when you go to uni.

Richie D from Newtown
I moved here 27 years ago from a big city. At first I was homesick. Three months later, I knew more people than I had for 23 years prior to the move. A lot depends on what your vocation is of course, but whenever I venture into town, it is more or less guaranteed, I will see someone that I know. Cities offer, commercialism and consumerism. It is easy to be lonely in a crowded place. I will never go back.
Fri Aug 4 09:04:07 2006

Frank Moore
Having lived in and around Newtown all my life, being born in Garthowen, moving to Abermule (an idyllic time for me) then on to Kerry (very forgettable!!) then some time spent down in Llanllwchaiarn "up in the woods" (glorious!) then back to the town, the changes I've experienced have, sadly, not been good. The introduction of the dreaded "Developement Board" many years ago proved to be an extreme disaster for what was once a "Dream location to live". Hoardes of "overspill" newcomers from the Midlands invaded our once quiet and peaceful town, ghastly cheap and nasty housing estates erected, the town centre decimated with the introduction of shopping arcades, the wanton destruction of historic areas/buildings, one of the worst being the erection of an arcade over the top of "Our Lady's Well" on which our Town was built. My Mother, the late Desley Moore, was a fierce campaigner against all this mayhem and became a "Champion" of the local people being both, a Local, and County Councillor in her time. Sadly, lack of support from other prominent figures in the community who were easily brainwashed by the hype and promises of a so-called "better future for the Town" resulted in what we have today, a Town without "Heart", a sad shadow of a Town that held so much in valuable history and sense of community.
Mon Jul 17 10:30:08 2006

Terry from Telford
I grew up in Newtown and i must admit now i'm older it was a fantastic place to live I made the mistake of moving to Telford with its crime ridden estates and its gangs of hoodie culture teenagers. After I moved, I thought it was great here. I even used to rubbish Newtown, but looking back and seeing some of the faults people have written about it, I sit here shaking my head. It is very easy to belittle the only place you have ever known since childhood. It's ok going somewhere like Telford for a day's shopping etc, but try living on one of the biggest housing estates in the country with its gangs of roaming bored teenagers or waking up to find your car has been broken into (6 times in 4 years) then tell me again how bad Newtown is... I don't think so. I would gladly trade places out of this hell hole and back to tranquility anyday. Three good things about Telford - ASDA, broadband PC connection & Princess Royal Hospital :o)

Sun Apr 2 16:22:47 2006

Simon once from Newtown
There aren't many places like Newtown, but there are many sides to the town. There is the fanstastic local population from the town and local area but then there is the influx of refugees from the Midlands. Soon all the character we once knew will be gone and instead it will be once a suburb of Birmingham and Wolverhamton. Shopping was once good, now it is pound shop after pound shop. The wages are kept low as there are only a handful of employers. Farming is dying along with most things in Mid Wales. Most peoples memories of Newtown are good from 20 years ago but now the present day Newtown is dying, with money short and kept between a few. Let's hope that we can start spending more money from the Assembly here instead of the M4 corridor. I left 7 years ago, I miss the town but really only the memories of distant friends.

Yeah Newtown is a nice town to live in but there are a few flaws. If your over 8 years old there is nothing for you...There is also a lack of commumity spirt which philip glynn talks about, everyone whinges about things that need doing but when it comes to it they can't be bothered, it's a shame because if we all, including the youth of our community, voiced our ideas and opinions newtown would be a better place.
Fri Mar 17 22:44:46 2006

Owen, Newtown
All places receive negative comments at varying times, and experiences differ, but having lived in Newtown my whole life (34 years and counting) I can categorically state that Newtown is a very good place to live. Between it's excellent schools, sports centre, after school activities, public transport, shops, cinema, theatre, football, rugby, golf, night life, eateries and job opportunities, Newtown has more going for it than most 'small' towns. I've lived at various locations in Newtown and found a great community spirit wherever I've lived, though residents on the Barnfields side of the river would be surprised to see the 'yob culture' on some of the larger Housing Estates. I wish the Council would take a more active role in stamping this out with better monitored play areas for children. If you are bored in Newtown then you need to open your eyes! Take up a sport or join a social group. The College has fantastic evening classes and most are subsidised, so their fairly inexpensive. I'm raising 3 children in town and I see no reason why they shouldn't enjoy Newtown in the 21st Century as I did growing up in the 20th. Add scenery, low crime rates and low pollution and you have a 'Wonderful Life'. It's just what you make of it. I have to admit that the one thing I'd love to see in Newtown is an Indoor 10-pin Bowling Alley with a 'Tumble Towers' type play centre for children. Maybe I'll have to build it myself!

Newtown is great ...well that is as long as you went to school there (along with several generations)! I found (and many other people also felt the same) that the people, esp the young ones, don't like "new" people or the fact its 2006 not 1990. As a result nothing changes, same music, same night out to "crystals" and then off to the "indian"... Ahh Newtown, the only good thing is the fact Llani is just a short drive away!

I was born in Newtown in 1948 and left in 1965 to do missionary work in England. After ten years in Shrewsbruy I moved to Kiddeminster in 1975 and still live here. Over the past 40 years I have made at least one return visit to Newtown every month. It is worth the drive to see family and consume a chelsea from Evan's. Newtown gave me a good start in life and I always enjoy a few minutes contemplation as I look upwards towards the Crows Lump.

mary, newtown
I've lived here all my life. It was ok growing up here but as I got older, the more I realised that there isn't really much for teenagers to do. Sure there's the odd youth club here and there but after a while they get boring too. The best thing for newtown to do is to stop spending loads of money on supermarkets that we don't need eg lidls and tescos, and to spend the money on something that WILL give us teenagers something to do. When most of us get bored, vandalism and binge drinking is usually the only answer to entertainment. If we had something like an arcade or just a place to hang out then everyone would be satisfied. Less vandalism and more enthusiasm about where we live. Anyway apart from that NEWTOWN'S GREAT!!!

I have lived here for 35 years, moving from the Midlands in 1974. I love it here, but oh the apathy of the people. I'm trying to save the pipe (tv and radio system) but virtually no support, oh many people ask in the street but nothing else, the Welsh Assembly don't want to know and the Powys County Councillors, well, let's just say most haven't yet contacted me and there is only just over 5 months to go before the pipe goes. Then it's aerials like everyone else.

Ahhh Newtown, lived there most of my life, and despite the fact that it's a bit of a goldfish bowl, I had a great time...until I realised what else the world has to offer. On the occasional visits back, there's definately a 'Royston Vasey' effect, ecspecially when going to 'certain' pubs in town. Despite that, the area is beautiful, and it's a great place to relax, particularly if you have come from the city. The older generations in the town are easy going and very welcoming. However there does appear to be a growing problem with younger generations, which some sections of the media call 'chavism'. In summary, a great place to visit, but don't stay too long...

I don't actually live in Newtown but I am a regular visitor from the Midlands and my family love Newtown. We know that we will get everything we want from the shops and everyone is so friendly. Can't wait to get back!!

Having moved from a big city my opinion of Newtown is very high. Besides the lack of pollution and pretty scenery, there's a community spirit that is really very lacking in larger places. Visiting the town I always see someone you know - and I've only been here 5 years! Because of this young people 'at a loose end' will never feel anonymous like they do in large towns and cities. People are courteous and friendly, and not as stressed whilst achieving little. Well some complain of the horrendous traffic queues [3 cars at the end of the road at 8:30 of a morning!]. Crime rates etc are laughable compared with the rest of the UK. So you have to travel to do some things but that's not so bad. I find the shops very cheap - we travel to larger cities - poisoning our lungs in the process, and then come back to find local shops are far cheaper than any big store. I think it only natural that people should strive to see what lies in the outside world. In my opinion the place is wonderful. Some of the small villiages are gorgeous too - but as I hail from a city I couldn't stand the isolation!

I have to agree with some of the comments about having no regrets about leaving Newtown a few years ago. Was fun growing up there. Do they have a new High Sheriff yet? Do think about home + might visit when I get back from Thailand.

I've lived in Newtown for most of my life. Sometimes it rocks, it's quiet and not polluted and stuff. But sometimes it's kinda boring - there isn't loads to do and the films at the cinema are always three weeks late.

I was born in newtown in 1973 and left for uni in 1992. My parents and family still live local to Newtown, but I could never move back. After being in the "wider" world, Newtown seems like a place with a severe lack of facilities and reminds me of "Royston Vasey". I enjoyed most of my time at Coleg Powys but my 5 years at Newtown High School sucked!

Newtown is not such a bad place. I grew up and went to school there, and had many good nights out at the Castle Vaults and the many other watering holes.

Is John Lucas formerly of Rochdale, out there? He was a gardener at Powis Castle in the seventies, and then moved to the Newtown area. We used to play french cricket in the garden at Marl lodge, Llandudno Junction in the fifties.

I have lived in Newtown for just over 20 years, I love the town, the people and would recommend anyone to visit Newtown and the surrounding area, as it has several sites of natural beauty and the people are great. Also I do voluntary work for an animal charity called Powys Animal Welfare Trust. It rescues all animal, takes great care of them and find good homes for the animals to spend the rest of their lives in, please support the Powys Animal Welfare Trust, they do great work for the animals and they need your support! Thanks.

Mmmm Newtown well I don't miss the town itself at all. But I've loads of mates and family there so I suppose I have to. There's not much for kids in school to do and it seems to be in the middle of an invasion from Birmingham and Liverpool!! What's that all about?

I wholeheartedly agree with the person saying about bullying... I had the most horrendous time when I was at Newtown and Machynlleth. I did not get bullied in my previous school in Essex... 1984 to 1986 - not best years of my life, that's for sure.

I am doing a sponsored beard and booze for lent. This started 8 years ago and each Lent and Advent I grow a beard and give up sweets/chocolate. It is a one man sponsor, the money collected this time going to the CAFOD (Catholic Fund for Overseas Development) tsunami appeal. I collect donations from the Newtown Catholic church and people in town. Could you please mention this effort on your pages please. It is a unique event, I know of no one else in the world who does it, unique to Newtown.

The ideal sized town.... not too big not too small with friendly people.... made a stranger (Leeds Utd fan) first day of the football season welcome in the town when Leeds beat Derby 1 - 0.... especially the locals in the Angel pub.

Missin' home in Newtown but lots of people here in Hereward College are interested in getting away from the stench of the city to my lovely green home! There are lots of resources in Newtown yet people don't understand the real capabilities this town have, it has just as much resources than Coventry only without as much pollution. Though I am scared of the road between the Co-Op and McDonalds as traffic is usually constant but home is where the heart is. It won't make up for Rhyader but times were tough there.

I personally think Newtown is a very pretty town. It is surrounded by lovely scenery. The town itself is known as a 'small town', it's by no means tiny, but its not massive. It's the biggest place in Mid Wales and does attract many jobs for the area. It could do with a few more shops and a retail park for example to make it more fun for the younger people, but we can survive. Oh and the football stadium at latham park is a very tidy ground, for a non league team!

I grew up in Newtown from the age of 4 til 32, having emigrated to Calgary 2 years ago. Newtown was brill for me with school, football and the socal side of things. So growing up there was great fun, work was fun too but sometimes you want more and we decided to have a look elsehwere. On the whole, Newtown is a safe and nice town to live in and we have lots of freinds and family who still live in the town.

I lived in Newtown - Mid Wales from 1989 - 2004 and saw a little country town with old fashioned ways come to terms with the 21st century. I have happy memories of the town and its people, everyone was very friendly and helpful. I have now returned to my native Southampton, but will keep a little place in my heart always for Newtown.

Newtown is a nice place to live, very quite and a happy town. But there is a problem with not much to do for us younger people. The school has inproved greatly and everyone is so nice. Rock on Newtown!!

Personally Newtown isn't the ideal place for young people. As havin grown up in Newtown and been bored most of the time i've been used to it! I'm still living in Newtown as I'm still in full-time education so I would like to see Newtown have more to do for young people.

The best bars in Newtown, in our opinion are The Castle Vaults and The Lion, why are neither mentioned? As regulars to both we thought we'd give them a mention ourselves!!
