Mid Wales Boat Club

Model boats

Last updated: 31 May 2007

Since the age of 10 Mike Burgum from Llandinam has been making models as a hobby. He moved to Wales 3 years ago and had a career change, and now work as a Groundsman for a Local Council. In May 2007 he wrote about his love of model boats:

"I have lived in Llandinam, Powys for 3 years now after spending 50 years in Enfield, Middlesex my place of birth.

My wife Monica and I moved to Wales for a better quality of life and thus so far have no reason to complain, except for the fact that there are no Model Boat Clubs in the area.

As a modeller in Middlesex I belonged to a Club called 'Broomfield Model Boat club' based in Palmers Green, North London where the social calendar was extremely full with venues varying from Country Shows, Classic Car Shows, Civic Engagements etc., which filled the Summer season considerably.

Charity Engagements including Swimming Pool Sails for underprivileged children and free sails for children on the Club Pond to encourage younger people into the hobby, which I must add encourages the development of manual skills and ingenuity of the young mind.

Here in Wales my friends and I are going to try to start up a club entitled the 'Mid Wales Model Boat Club' which we hope will encourage younger as well as older people into our hobby.

Model Boats We have had some encouraging enquiries in the last year, which leads us to believe there could be a future in this area locally.

Our biggest drawback is the lack of a local pond on which we can sail at will.

We are therefore appealing to the local community for a Club Pond, with ample parking for Club Members and public, with a good expanse of water, with a view to promoting our hobby.

Our Club will have a friendly atmosphere with on hand practical advice on how to go about 'Building Your Own Boat' from scratch, 1 to 1, or at pond side.

We will also be organising public displays, sail regattas, war boat days, junior sailing days, tug towing events, steering courses and fast electric racing to name but a few.

All this of course hinges on the acquisition of a home pond. So come on you locals make my day!

At this moment our prospective membership consists of 5 members, with some 30 model boats of radio control capability, from 1ft to 8ft in length.

War ships, fast electrics, sail boats, merchant vessels etc., also scale static models and steam boats.

I have sailed my model on Llandod lake but the lake has been drained and remodelled. At present it is half full while the new banks consolidate. I would like to join a local club and have an R/C Comtesse.

I have both sail boats and tugs and like John, would dearly love to get them afloat in the company of like minded individuals. The canal basin at Brecon is not ideal!November 2007.

Has your Club been established and does it encourage RC Yachts? What are membership rates and will memebership include 3rd party insurance? As a venue is the Lake at Llandrindod Wells too far? Currently there is only a loose association of enthusiasts using the lake - I have never seen more than 2 using the facility at any one time

I have seen a tempting looking pond which appears to be public on the B4368 just beyond Kerry which is signposted to Sawmills I believe. It is a couple of miles south of the A489. I have a sail boat which has been unused since retiring 8 years ago but would be interested in getting it afloat in a suitable location.
