"He talks to the animals...no, not Dr Doolittle but Stephen McKeown.
Whilst practising a range of therapies to promote wellness in horses, communication is where Stephen often starts in order to really understand his patient.
This work helps to address old issues and can overcome behavioural problems. It can also often unearth some amusing facts!
For example, one horse remembered someone with short blonde hair who he really didn't like and who he often tried to bite as she walked past his stable.
After some investigation, his current owner discovered that a previous owner had a stable hand with short blonde hair who thought that the horse loved her and only tried to bite her if she didn't stop to talk to him on her way past!
Stephen has had great success with horses who are difficult to load or who show emotional disorders such as nervousness or irrational fears.
One horse who used to take 3 hours to get in the trailer now walks in first time after a communication session.
<,p>Stephen is particularly modest about what he does. He claims that this is something that we can all do if we want to.
He is happy to show owners how they can build better relationships with their horses by using some of the communication techniques, and will be running workshops later this year to do just that.
Other therapies that he uses include Cymatics, a state of the art treatment using sonics to treat muscle, bone and tendon injuries. This increases the speed of healing allowing horses to stay in work longer and can also be used before competitions to strengthen tissues prone to injury."

We have a 16 hands horse who over the last few weeks has started to throw herself at the division in our trailor and gets into a state so cannot transporter to competitions. This happens after a few minutes standing in box before starting the engine. We have been recommended, by the race horse owners of our yard, to give Nupafeed MAH calmer every day in her feed and have tried to sedate her before trying to box her.The situation was worse when we tried lasr Friday and have not yet tried again, wil try tomorrow when next go to yard.

Bought my horse a couple of months ago and as soon as he arrived on the yard his temperament changed and behaves very erratic sometimes ok then i went away for 10 days and have fought ever since just wants me off and have had a bad fall from it. Nothing medically wrong just seems badly behaved, not the horse I bought. Is there anything I can do?? I've had a professional ride him and he behaves the same.

I have a pony that is difficult to box, once in the box after a rebellious stage he either panics and runs back out of the back breaking the string that he is tied to or he will try to fall down in the back of the box. It is a front and rear loading trailer can you help in any way?

Stephen came to treat our 2 donkeys who would not let anyone near their back legs. The farrier referred to the jenny as "kicking like a chorus girl". Two sessions with Stephen and she was like a pussycat. I don't know what he does but it works.

I feel that the communication I had with Stephen regarding my pony daz was valuable and raised many interesting points and confirmed a lot of what I already suspected. I was disappointed that the follow up call wasn't received.

I completely agree that comunication (or lack of it) is the cause of the majority of problems with the "problem" horse. If we all learnt to listen to our horses, and what they are trying to tell us then we'd see a lot fewer injuries to both horse & human.
