Davies Sisters Remembered
Curators from the National Museum of Wales held a special event at the Oriel Davies in Newtown on Thursday 4 May 2006. The aim of the day was to find out more about the everyday lives of the Davies Sisters of Gregynog, and many people with family connections to the estate attended. Find out more by clicking through a series of photos from the day.

Before I left Newtown County School in 1945 I and a friend from school used to cycle to Gregynog to visit the Dutch children. The ones with the tidiest bedroon used to be able to fly their flag from the bedroom window. I used to write pen pal letters to two of them - Jaan Dann and Jo Kraus. They lived at Ousterbeck and Oudenbosch if I remember and spell correctly. They paid a visit to the County school one day where we met.

I grew up in Tregynon, very beautiful place. I loved the hall (the dell) for me it was my magicical place with my siblings. I do visit every 5 years, Tregynon, it will always have a place in my heart till the day I die, I know a lot of stories of Tregynon and I remember the post office lady(Thelma) her daughter (Karen) fell on me and broke my arm when i was a kid.

One of my aunts, Miss Evans, was the cook for the Davies sisters, having before that been the cook for the Gregynog Press. I lived with her for part of the second world war and was a constant visitor right up until they died and left my aunt the use of her flat at gregynog for the rest of her life.
The sisters were very kind to me when I was a child and I have one of 'Miss Daisey's' paintings which she gave to my aunt.
One nice feature of being there in the war was the supply of lovely and even exotic fruit form the gardens
