Cats Protection

Burmese cat

Last updated: 01 April 2008

Newtown and District branch of Cats Protection has been operating since 1986. Volunteer Lynsey Owen told us more about their work in March 2008:

"Newtown and District branch of Cats Protection has been operating since 1986 and has provided essential cat welfare work through the neutering and rehoming of over 2000 cats and kittens in this time. All this fantastic work is done with just 12 volunteers, 3 fosterers, 6 cat pens and a willingness to help the community and care for cats.

The Branch is soon to launch a new website and have recently started a free education program for clubs and schools discussing the importance of cat care, neutering and microchipping.

Newtown and district branch of Cats Protection works closely with other volunteer and charity organisations as they are striving to achieve Cats Protections vision: "To ensure that every cat is given the chance of a life where it will be treated with kindness and understanding of its needs."

Cats Protection helps 142,000 cats and kittens every year through its national network of 256 volunteer-run branches and 29 Adoption Centres and can have more than 6,500 felines in its care at any one time.

6,800 volunteers carry out the majority of the charity's work - including fostering, home visiting, fundraising and public relations and so on.

Each year, Cats Protection:
1. Rehomes 52,000 cats
2. Neuters 100,000 cats
3. Issues 400,000 cat care leaflets
4. Answers 100,000 calls to its Helpline
5. Reunites around 3,600 missing cats with their owners

93p in every £1 donated to Cats Protection goes to helping cats directly.

The summer months are the busiest time for Cats Protection as unneutered cats breed in the warmer weather. Every year our 29 adoption centres alone take in around 6,000 abandoned kittens - around five times the number of kittens that they take in during the rest of the year."

On Friday the 27th of June we will be opening our first ‘Open Advice Surgery’. We will be in the Market Hall in Newtown every Friday for the foreseeable future from 9.30am -4.30pm.We have decided to open our new surgery in the hope of re-establishing our place in the community and our commitment to the area.We will hold a monthly fundraising event at the surgery. We will have a notice board displaying photos and details of all the cats and kittens in our care looking for a home. We will accept donations of soft toys and good quality bric-a-brac. We will also have an assortment of cat care advice leaflets. We are looking for volunteers to help man the surgery, if we can arrange for a regular group of volunteers we can also open the surgery on a Thursday 9-2pm. If you would like to volunteer please email us or come down to the surgery.

I have been with Cats protection Newtown for many years. Our cats are extremely well cared for by experienced & caring fosterers. I do the home checks and am very particular that every cat/kitten goes to the best possible home. All of us in the group work very hard and I am proud to be part of this excellent charity.
