New Quay Lifeboat

Last updated: 17 August 2006

Like many a seaside town, New Quay has a long and proud lifeboat tradition. Albert Moller is the RNLI operations manager at New Quay and he's contributed the following information about the station's history. The pictures were taken by Tony Denton a lifeboat enthusiast unless otherwise stated. The archive photos are published courtesy of the RNLI archive in Poole.

The first lifeboat station in New Quay was constructed in 1864 at the request of the local inhabitants. The first lifeboat, 'Forester' arrived in December of that year and was renamed `Nelson' in 1871. She was 35 feet 9 inches long with a beam of 8 feet and rowed by 12 oars. Arthur Wood was the first Hon. Sec. but unfortunately the name of the first Coxswain was never recorded.
