Marine Wildlife Sightings 2009
Last updated: 04 August 2009
During the summer of 2009, staff at the Cardigan Bay Marine Wildlife Centre based in New Quay are sending in regular reports of marine wildlife sightings in Cardigan Bay from the survey vessel Sulaire. In their tenth report, Sam Ferdman records some of the sealife spotted between 27 July and 2 August 2009.

Totals for the week:
115 Bottlenose Dolphins; 40 Atlantic Grey Seals; 5 Harbour Porpoise.
"This week's sightings showed another rise in bottlenose dolphin spottings; another excellent and exciting sign for the upcoming weeks. The dolphins, however, have not been as playful as last week, and proved much trickier to spot from the New Quay pier.
This week also showed a rise in porpoise and seal sightings. The increase in porpoise sightings is a sign that these animals are adapting. They're using strategy to increase their rate of survival.
They're banding together against their mighty foe. Or the calmer winds and good weather has allowed us to spot their, small, dark, fleeting triangular dorsal fins.
The Atlantic grey seal sightings have been pretty steady in the month of July, and that trend is continuing here in August so far, with just a 4 seal increase. This week, the seals have been venturing fairly close to the boat as well, coming within 5 metres at one point."
