Led Zeppelin

Pauline Bowen

Last updated: 25 February 2009

Pauline Bowen from Aberystwyth is a lifelong Led Zeppelin fan. She's writing a book about her favourite rock band and is hoping to find a publisher in 2006. As part of her research, she's been looking into the group's Mid Wales connections.

Written by Led Zeppelin fan Pauline Bowen from Aberystwyth:

"Robert Plant has great ties with Mid Wales. He owns a farmhouse near Machynlleth and this is where I met him last year.

Led ZeppelinRobert used to come to this house with his parents when he was a small child. Soon after, it became derelict and run down. Later, when Robert made it big in Led Zeppelin, he bought the farmhouse and restored it to its former glory!

Secondly, in Corris just outside Machynlleth - on a spot that has over hanging cables and is very desolate - Plant and Page worked on two songs, namely Nobody's Fault But Mine and When The Levee Breaks in 1994.

The Bron Yr Aur track appears on the Physical Graffiti album which is in relation to his house. At Dolgoch Falls, the video for No Quarter was filmed back in 1997.

Bron yr Aur The lyrics for Stairway to Heaven were written at Robert's home near Machynlleth (that piece of information was told to me in a converstion I had with Robert Plant in August 2003).

Finally back in the 1970s, Robert, John Paul Jones,John Bonham, and Jimmy Page found inspiration in the Welsh countryside when they visited Bron yr Aur Cottage, on the edge of the Snowdonia National Park - a place of outstanding natural beauty. I visited this beautiful cottage and it has not changed in thirty years. They came to work on their music all that time ago and it still remains peaceful and very beautiful - a place every true Led Zeppelin fan should see.

Other Zeppelin sites of interest in this area, are Aberdovey, where Robert Plant is seen in a boat flying the Welsh flag in the film The Song Remains the Same, Pennal Church, where Robert unveiled the statue of Owain Glyndwr, in the princes' garden of the church in September 2004, Corris where Plant and Page came back in the 1990s to do two songs for the No Quarter video, and also Dolgoch Falls.

Also, in the grounds of Machynlleth Plas stands another statue in relation to Owain Glyndwr where Plant gave money to have this put there. Also Robert Plant owns a Welsh farm in the area, again seen in The film The Song Remains The Same."

Written by Led Zeppelin fan Pauline Bowen from Aberystwyth

Pauline sent this update in May 2006:

"I have written to two publishers (America Ediathena, and Stockwell from Devon UK) and they have asked me to send in the completed manscript. I was so pleased. I am hoping the very last chapter of the book will be an interview with Robert Plant. No publishing deal has been reached yet. What I would say to others is if you want to do something go for it and keep going. You only get one chance to do it."

Pauline sent this update on her research in October 2007:

Since Led Zeppelin disbanded in 1980, John Paul Jones fans have been lucky to see him on tour with Diamanda Galas in late 1994, he also worked with Heart on "The Road Home" album in 1995 and performed with them in August 1994 in the back stage club in Seattle, USA.

In September 1999 the first ever solo album Zooma was released, I have this album and it is well worth listening to. He is a great muscian, and has an extroardinary talent.

He also worked with The New Zealand group The Datsuns, who I had the pleasure of meeting in London in 2003, they were honoured to have John Paul Jones help them to produce their album.

Jimmy Page - Rated the greatest guitarist in the world, since his Zeppelin days has been very involved musically, including, in 1984, a recording with Robert Plant as The Honeydrippers. He also teamed up with Paul Rodgers of Bad Company and more recently in November 2006 Led Zeppelin were inducted into the UK music hall of fame.

Page attended the induction of Led Zeppelin to the UK Music Hall of Fame, and told the BBC that he planned to record new material in 2007 stating 'it is an album I really need to do'.

In November this year Led Zeppelin are to re unite for a one off gig at Londons 02 arena in honour of Atlantics late founder Ahmet Ertegun, who died tragically in an accident last year (2006).

I hope to finish my book, Zeppelin Memories, next year, and at the moment I am working on the last Chapter which includes a very rare photograph that I have managed to get hold of from a rock photographer in New York. It is of Robert Plant, and taken from below the stage, so that is an exciting piece of Zeppelin history to be included in this book.

In July 2008 I sent to a French publisher, ten random pages from my completed book, so I am now awaiting his decision, if he will publish for me. Due to personal problems, it has taken longer to complete, than anticipated but thankfully at last it is."

Never been much for rock music more into Vivaldi normally but at the Greenman festival I was working at the Cwmdu School Food Stall I over heard Robert Plant on the main stage really quite mind blowing and that was without any chemical stimulants, I am now a Led Zep convert.

Keep going Pauline, the more Led Zep info for us addicts the better. I have seen Robert Plant a few times locally. One of my mates was at a wedding reception for a relative of his wife's when he saw Robert Plant at the bar. He told his wife who said 'oh yeah he is my cousin' at which my mate dashed home, got his Led Zep record collection and brought them to the reception asking for Robert Plant to kindly autograph each which he did. Shows Robert Plant's good side I think.

Hi, would be interested in the book when it is published. If anyone wants to experience Led Zeppelin as they once were, look alikes are uncanny and play alikes doubly so but get a chance to see Letz Zep (see their website) and they are fantastic. They are Led Zeppelin re-born in every sense.

Firstly, good luck with the book Pauline. Have just found this site as a referal from my brother Dai Williams who wrote a post in response to Jane Birch Thomlinson, my cousin. I would like to add my two penneth by adding to Del Gwalchmais post. I remember vividly the night John and Jason duetted 'Moby Dick' at the drill hall in Machynlleth. It was a time when Jason was about 14 yrs old and they were regular visitors to the area for motorcross meetings up on Dylife, in which Jason used to race. They became very friendly with many people in the area and John agreed to do this gig for charity. After the gig, John sold Zep albums for a quid each and signed them. Hence I have about 7 Zep albums signed by John Bonham in my possession. What a great night. Jason does his dad proud. I sincerely hope they entertain us some more.

As the first cousin of Jane Birch Tomlinson, the boat belonged to my grandfather also. But being a wee bit older than Jane I can also relate a bit mor of the story of how my Grandfather's boat came to be in the film The Song Remains the Same. My grand father was approached by some young impoverished looking young hippies who wanted to hire his boat and his services for a couple of days to do some filming in the dyfi estuary, my taid duly obliged and set a rate. During the sequence where Planty is standing at the bow of the boat my grandfather was required to crouch down at the stern of the b! oat in order to manoeuver the boat using a rope tied around the tiller. A few days later my mother relayed the story to me that some rock group had hired taid's boat. I asked her how much they had paid him? Apparently my Taid had not charged them too much at all, because he had thought that they didn't have much money as they were wearing such scruffy clothes and looked really poor. I at the time hadn't actually given a lot of thought to the fact my grandads boat was in a ZEP film until I watched the song remains the same in a cinema in Cardiff some years later. You can imagine my shock and elation when it suddenly dawned on me after a few seconds that the baot on the screen was in actual fact my Taid's.

The boat (Sea Spray) referred to by Pauline Bowen that Led Zeppelin were filmed on in Aberdovey, holding a welsh dragon flag, belonged to my grandfather, Ellis Williams.

I also remember seeing Robert Plant in the Angel Inn in Aberystwyth. The area at the back played host to a lot of Welsh language sessions during the early 80's . The Angel was also associated with, shall we say, unusual tobacco. There was a rumour that Led Zep had offered to play a gig for the Welsh Language Society, but that the offer had been turned down. Robert Plant has also recently referred to a gig at the King's Hall (pulled down in 1989 ) as the worst venue they played. Not so tactful now, eh ?

Your book will be worth the wait Pauline. Having listened to Led Zepp for many years and spending many hot summer holidays in the family caravan a couple of miles south of Aberystwyth, I remember the long car journey, through and past the beautiful misty mountains (sounds familiar)and waterfalls. Well done Pauline. Can't wait.

I went to Wales in 1987 saw amazing things especially carreg cennen castle. where are these places in relation to carreg cennen? Thanks to you i think i can find bron-yr-aur and shouldn't have to hard of a time finding Raglan but the rest of these places remain a mystery. oh and the forest as well. where are these places in relation to the brecon beacons, black mountains and carreg cennen? thank you so much, can you help me?

Too bad Plant doesn't own it any more. So Bron-Yr-Aur is a house in Gwynedd, Wales, on a hilltop overlooking the Dyfi Valley. Its name, means breast of the gold or hill of the gold in Welsh. Bron-Yr-Aur is best known for its association with English rock group Led Zeppelin. The 18th century cottage had been used by the family of Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant during the 1950s as a holiday house. In 1970, Plant and guitarist Jimmy Page spent time there after a long and gruelling concert tour of the United States. Though the cottage had no running water or electricity, they used it as a retreat to write and record some of their third album, Led Zeppelin III. Also at the cottage at the time were Plant's wife Maureen and 18-month-old daughter Carmen, Page's girlfriend Charlotte Martin, and Led Zeppelin roadies Clive Coulson and Sandy MacGregor. Led Zeppelin songs whose beginnings can be traced to Plant and Page's time at Bron-Yr-Aur in 1970 include "Over the Hills and Far Away" and "The Crunge" (both from Houses of the Holy), "The Rover", "Bron-Yr-Aur" and "Down By The Seaside" (from Physical Graffiti), "Poor Tom" (from Coda) and three they actually used on Led Zeppelin III: "Friends", "Bron-Y-Aur Stomp" and "That's the Way". There were also two songs recorded but lost, called "Another Way To Wales" and "I Wanna Be Her Man".

I actually met Robert in Dixons in Aberystwyth. I thanked him for 30 years of brilliant music and shook his hand. I reminded him of the last LZep concert in Knebworth which I was very proud to have attended and introduced him to my son, who also loves rock music. Robert is a really nice guy and there is not a bit of the Rock God Superstar about him that you find in some others. Good luck with the book, Pauline!

Always been a great fan of the band, and whilst living in Aberystwyth, I think it was in 1973 when I heard that the band were to play a concert at the Kings Hall, on the seafront at Aberystwyth. The concert was a sell-out, and my friend and I had the best tickets (middle of the front row, up in the balcony!). Obviously, they were amazing, and if I recall again from the write-up’s in the music papers, the band were quite bemused by the fact that the audience were eerily civilised due to the fact that we were all sat down throughout the “gig”, with no attempt made to try ! and breach the stage - as was usual with such a world-renown band! Then, about a year after that, I was having a tipple, and game or two of darts in one of the few pubs in Borth (just up the coast from Aber), when Robert Plant walked in with a couple of his mates. This was really a dream come true, and I managed to get his autograph; but the best bit of all was when we then went on to the village hall to watch some friends of ours play a gig (the band were "Smokestack"), Robert walked in to the hall, came and sat by us, and started talking about "tickling" fish! How bizzare is that? The guy was a real gentleman, and so "down to earth"!

Led Zeppelin are now so universally revered that their few remaining critics sound more rediculous with each passing year.(ie Rolling Stone magazine, who are now reduced to damning with faint praise).Their top 500 albums of all time issue is a joke among everyone I know. Zep's highest ranking album was 29 on their biased list. Give me a break, Zeppelin should have at least two albums in the top ten, arguably three or four. Excuse me for ranting, but I've seen virtually all of the great bands of the last thirty years, and as great as some were, none could touch Led Zeppelin. I saw them in the early 70's! They were the most intense and powerful band in the history of rock. For a band that dominated an entire decade of rock, there has yet to be written a high quality proper biography about the band. How about a great book and a well made film? If .like millions of others, I'm very passionate about this band because I still don't think they have gotten their due. Good luck with your book. I will certainly be buying a copy.

When my girlfriend suggested going to Snowdonia on holiday, I told her that I had to make it to Bron yr Aur. On a chilly, rainy afternoon in May we made it down from our B&B in Llanberis to Machynlleth. I had no information besides a picture of the cottage and the O.S. map with "Bron yr Aur" on it. We were disappointed to find the Celtic Museum closed, and stopped in a pub for lunch. Then we made it out of town, apprehensively parked our rental car up the "no motor vehicles" road, and made it in the rain through the gate and past the sheep around to the cottage. It was magical. I will never forget it. And my girlfriend was such a trooper, slogging throught the mud with me! Thanks, Bonnie!

Excellent Pauline! Great to read personal stories on this site. I will buy a copy of the book for sure. Saw LZ 3 times in 1977 - NYC, Madison Square, Cleveland, Richfield Arena, Detroit, Pontiac Stadium - all opened with 'Been a long time since I rock'n'rolled' Plant jumps off the stage s the lights go on and Jimmy comes sliding across the stage on one foot bangin on the guitar. Three hours straight - no intermission - each time. WOW!

a few years ago myself and 3 friends rented a 16th century farmhouse in mid-wales. the name of the town eludes me but I do remember driving there through the Welsh night, trees forming a cathedral over the narrow 2 lane with Led Zepp IV on the stereo and thinking how it was the absolute perfect soundtrack. I met Percy Plant, as we close friends called him, and his bouncer Frosty many times in the Angel Inn at Aberystwyth. He was always with my old mate George Rowlands, who looked after his home near Furnace, whilst Mr Plant was a tax exile in the US in the 70s. Robert (Percy) Plant, was always there for the anyone who approached him. Always so nice, and I will never forget his charm, and being so nice. I have so many memories of having a pint with Robert, and thinking, what a nice guy he his, for all his fame and money.

I grew up in Mach. My sister used to hang out with Led Zeppelin when they were in town, this was in the '70s. Her name, Donna Guthrie. Machynlleth is my mother's home town and my siblings and I are American. We lived with my grand parents while my mother & father lived in hostile countries on work projects. I remember Robert Plant eating apple pie and hot custard in my granny's little kitchen, at 39 Treowen. They were in town at least twice a year or more. I will tell my sister about your book, she has a lot of stories about them. This site brings back a lot of memories. They used to drink at the Red Lion. Billy Ellis my uncle might know some stories about Led Zeppelin, He was always getting into everything in town. Good luck.

Like you, Pauline, I have been a big fan of Led Zeppelin and, in particular, Robert Plant, for a long, long time! I know that Robert takes inspiration for many of his songs from the beautiful countryside that surrounds him. I've often wondered what his part of the world is like and hope that, one day, I might see it in person. Thank you for giving us a "local's" point of view on this wonderful man and the special place he calls home. Cheers!!

After missing a few opportunities to see Robert live, I finally suceeded and saw him perform with the Strange Sensation on Sunday evening at V2005. Robert's performance (and that of the band too) was way above my expectation truly fantastic what a great bloke! Am looking forward to seeing them again in December in Wolves. Fantastic!!! Dream come true!!!!!!!!!

As a student in Aber in the early 70s I saw Led Zep play at the, now demolished, King's Hall. Got in by being in charge of one of the follow spots on the balcony.

One of my mates in work was in constant contact with him in the Monmouth area (popping into the pub). Hhe used to bomb around in a 4X4 Sherpa Van! My claim to fame is that I stood next to him in the queue for the toilet at Black Sabbath concert in 1998 (Birminham NEC)!

I remember my daughter loved Led Zeppelin so much back in the 1970s. I have seen Robert Plant lately on Austin City Limits (American/Canadian TV). I thought he was pretty good, cause he did some blues (my favourite), and I'm 86 years old! I know my daughter and grandaughter are going to see Robert Plant soon in Vancouver, so he has crossed 3 generations in our family.

Pauline -- nice job on writing about Plant the the Wales area! You've done a great job in getting some beautiful pictures, which show why the countryside is so special. Being a photographer I can appreciate that. Looking forward to reading your book -- hope you enjoy my take on Wales in my book Whole Lotta Led, too! An awesome place!

It's good to see that someone is finally looking at Led Zep in Wales, and in general. Like so many, I've been a fan since art college days at Kelsterton College on Deeside. It was then that I went to see them at Earls Court London in May 1975 (as featured on their DVD). Since then I've met Robert Plant at Central Station in Wrexham, when he autographed my Led Zep biography. I had the opportunity to spend 30 minutes with him during pre-show discussions - mind blowing experience.I've also seen him on 2 other occasions, Manchester Apollo and Liverpool Academy, where I was reviewing both shows, from which I have setlists and selection of press pictures.

I went to see Led Zeppelin play the King`s Hall at the beginning of the 70`s. We were told Robert Plant wanted to play a gig for the locals rather than the students. Before the show we went for a drink in the Belle Vue Lounge Bar and discovered Plant, dressed for the gig, sitting at a table drinking tea (which had been served on an ostentatiously ornate tray) and chatting with some Mach biker lads. In the 60s the Stones and Cream had played the King`s Hall - the guy who owned it then used to book really big names for his weekend dance nights - but Zeppelin outdid them for auditory violence and nearly blew the old place`s roof off that night.
