Thousand Mile Walk

Kath Jones

Last updated: 24 November 2005

In February 2004, Kath Jones from Adfa near Newtown set off on the 1,000-mile walk from Lands End to John o' Groats. She finished 56 days later and raised more than £5,000 for local charities.

"The idea of doing this walk had been in the back of my mind for years - something I would like to do 'sometime'.

Three years ago, my husband had an accident which changed his attitude to life. He says you've got to do what you want to do while you still can, because you don't know what's round the corner. He was very supportive.

The walk was dedicated to the memory of Jimmy Logan, the veteran Scottish entertainer who died of oesophageal cancer in April 2001.

Five weeks before he died he organised (and starred in) a charity concert which raised £30,000. The way he faced up to his cancer was my inspiration.

The walk was sometimes tiring and a bit lonely, but I like my own company and I met lots of interesting people along the way. It was a very satisfying experience and I saw lots of beautiful countryside.

I tried to make the route interesting by using Long Distance footpaths, canal towpaths, and disused railway lines where possible.

I would like to thank all those who have supported me, especially our local village hall in Adfa who organised a Bingo night and auction to help me raise funds."

I am planning my own route this summer and would very much apreciate any information you have on your route and any advice you have as I am only 19 and have little knowledge of planning such large walks.
