The Runway Club

Dame Vera Lynn

Last updated: 05 October 2007

Every other Sunday from 14 October 2007 Aberystwyth's RAFA Club will hold a battle of the bands competition between two local outfits. The audience decides who wins half the night's takings, but the winning band have to sing their version of Dame Vera Lynn's wartime classic 'We'll Meet Again' to claim the cash. Organiser Richard Carratt explains more about The Runway Club.

"I joined the R.A.F.A. club, where the gigs are being held, last year, mostly because it had a nice pint and a decent price and as somewhere to go that wasn't the 'normal' town pub.

After getting to know a few people in there a conversation on the uses of the clubs back room came up. They have been finding it hard to keep the club going in today's 'pub/party' culture and what else was on offer in town based towards the students and locals who like entertainment.

After looking and asking what was out there in Aberystwyth, and what wasn't there more importantly, It was clear that there was very little geared to regular live music, or places for bands to play regularly.

This I thought could be a good way of helping the club out, the local bands and also provide people with another place to go. But I wanted something different again.

I decided upon the 'mini battles '. Not only did it offer somewhere to play but it also offered another side for the bands, they could challenge other bands or be challenged themselve, maybe putting an end to the 'Who is the best band in the area' argument. Now there is a stage to prove it.

The audience decides who is the best now by voting at the end of the show. The winner then has to sing their version of the old classic 'We'll Meet Again' to finally claim their prize.

Why this song ? Well it is a timeless classic that fits in well with the R.A.F.A. Club and also a good sing along song, but hopefully will also be the main theme of the club that the audience and the bands will come back to the club and 'Meet Again'.

The Runway Club is a place where bands can land on the Aberystwyth music scene and maybe take off to higher things."

The club will run from 8.00pm to 12.00pm so you can have some fun before going into town the enjoy the rest of your evening."

The Runway Club is now back in the R.A.F.A. Club where it belongs. Look out for some changes to the club and some new entertainment for all ages in Aberystwyth.
