The Square Festival 2008

Chris Dare

Last updated: 05 June 2008

Pendulum, Alabama 3 and Radio Luxembourg were amongst a host of musicians who appeared at The Square Festival in Borth on 26 and 27 July 2008. Event organiser Chris Dare told us more about the event in June 2008:

  • More about Borth...

  • "The Square festival takes place in Borth, a small coastal village, around 5 miles North of Aberystwyth. The festival site is around 100m from Cardigan bay, and you can see the site from the train station in Borth, the festival site is very unique and exciting for all involved.

I held a smaller event on the land in 2006, there was great feedback from the people that attended. After a break in 2007 it was time to bite the bullet and to establish a festival that Aberystwyth and Ceredigion has needed for years.

A decision was taken to invite some great local promotion companies to look after different stages in the event on board we have 'Kontrol', Aberystwyth's most popular dance nights specialising in drum and bass, 'Backbeating sounds' is holding 'The world music stage' a mix up of gypsy, klezmer, ska, reggae, acoustic and Balkan beats.

'The runway club' and 'the living room' are looking after a self titled stage hosting all varieties of Rock music with an emphasis on up and coming artists, we also have a cabaret stage for anybody who has entertainment value!

The Sunshine stage is hosted by myself and Andy Hamilton, see the website for information on the line up.

Chris DareAt the Square festival we think it is important to distinguish ourselves with acts that we book, and this year have worked around the clock to put together a very exciting and un-obvious line up, from World class headliners as well as local favourites and up, coming bands and exiting homecomings.

We pride ourselves on being good value for money, there will be no fees for camping or parking, there will be no extortion in the festival site, with alcohol and food both at reasonable prices, and local produce where possible.

Taking care of the surrounding environment is paramount to the festival, we are working with the Centre for Alternative Technology to help promote their objectives at the festival, Please see our website on the right hand side of the page for more information on our policies.

In the future the organisers to work hard on re-inventing the 'British festival', We have discussed numerous new concepts on what a festival should be, it is also of great importance for us to maintain a professional and safe reputation. This year will be an excellent event for the area, and a great chance to show what Borth has to offer... and In future expect wonderful things."

Was a great week for us to be Holidaying in Borth, The stella flowed well down at the Railway Inn, not often you come across skinny dippers in a pub, a rare treat.I would recommend the pub food.Good to see that Borth has yet to be hit by the health and safety do-gooders and a traditional type village festival can take place. Thanks for the hospitallity

I have attened loads of festivals in my time and this one was a little different,it was in such a stunning location. alabama 3 played which was worth going for alone, the rest of the festival was small but relaxing. The only thing i can really complain about was the unnessecary queues of entry . The wait of every one being scanned, i know that this is needed to keep out thugs but childen being scanned was a bit far, would i go next year , yes defintly ,would recommend to anyone. security needed to guard camping field so people tents dont get robbed. wicked weekend.

just back to belfast after a superb couple of days at the Square.. fantastic! i been goin to borth for over 20 years now, an i didnt think the place could have been improved...i was wrong! this is, as chris puts it, the event the area has needed..what a good vibe there was! i hit loads of people with my frisbee and nobody minded! an what about the pendulum dj set? insane! i want next years dates so i can book my annual leave! oh, an don't worry about the Flos of this world..they are everywhere an best simply ignored..i speak from bitter personal experience!

Me my friends and family all attended the square festival, it was lovely to be at a festival and on a beach at the same time. my children loved it, only one problem was our tents being robbed of our childen psp and dvd players, but not to worry who ever took it will have there karma. thanks andy for allowing us to take van to tent to unpack, realy helped. vodka jelly girl xxxxx

I'm in shock at the terrible comments made by Flos. The Square Festival was amazing! 2 days of fab music, brilliant sunshine, good quality and reasonably priced food and drink and a fantastic party atmosphere! Bring it back next year! It was truly superb!

Flos obviously wasn't at the same festival as anyone else in Wales. I just got home - sunburnt and exhausted - and had one of the best weekends in ages.Saturday night was amazing! Anyone know who was headlining the runway stage? Me and a couple of friends stumbled in on the offchance and were blown away!!The festival's been a breath of fresh air, the music's been top notch and the setting was fantastic. 2009 please?xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
