Musicfest Student
Last updated: 28 November 2006
Aberystwyth's annual Musicfest gives young music students a chance to play together and take part in masterclasses with some of the UK's finest classical musicians. Former student Richard Crompton has written this article about his experience and a special fundraising event for the 2007 festival.
"My name is Richard Crompton and, as many people will know, I am very musically active in the Aberystwyth area.
I first attended Musicfest - Aberystwyth's very own international music festival and summer school in 1999.
I have been a student of the summer school four or five times and it is an overwhelming musical experience. Students attending the summer school have the opportunity to play with world-class musicians. The atmosphere is great as everyone wants to have fun making music. It isn't competitive.
One of the highlights for me was being able to take part in a masterclass with Antony Halstead, one of the finest French horn players in the UK whose recordings are frequently heard on BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM.
I would say to any prospective muscifest attendees - Do it - you will learn more about ensemble playing and playing with other people than any other way of teaching. You might also qualify for a bursary there are a few available and you can contact Muscifest for more details.
There will be a fund-raising event for bursaries
on 8 May 2007 when two of MusicFest's perennial stars, former Young Musicians of the Year, Tom Poster and Guy Johnston will be taking time out from their busy international schedules to perform for free in order to raise money for bursaries. "
