'Audio-Paradise' Aber

Ashokan Dilwyn Roberts Young from Aberystwyth is a harmonica player, a music pundit and compulsive gig-goer. Here's his take on what the town's music scene has to offer.

"Aberystwyth is audio-paradise for anyone with a passion for music.

On the live music front, Scholars brings you the best in acoustic music with regular visits by Heather Jones, the New Druids and arguably the best acoustic band in Wales - Swansea based The Amigos.

Rummers is another venue synonymous with good live music. One of the best performances so far this year must have been that of Ummh - a band which suceeds in fusing jazz, funk and hip-hop to, somehow, create a very Welsh sound.

The Footie has played host to a number of excellent gigs and the most memorable in recent years must have been the 'TEW' night which saw Pep le Pew reminding us that their unique style of hip-hop has taken Welsh language music, y Sîn Roc Gymraeg, into a new dimension.

Local hip-hop band Kenavo recently moved from internet rumour to live gigs and have surprised many with their knowing, confident style.

Where confidence is concerned Sam Rhys James of Mozz and The Poppies seems to be on a crusade to create a musical revolution! As well as stirring performances with both bands he has been the instigator of Castell Rock an event which this summer proved a spectacular success for the second year running.

There were many highlights on the day including the set played by Ashokan - without doubt the greatest live band in the universe!

All this and The Human League playing in the Arts Centre a mere week before Christmas!

Aberystwyth is musical heaven - here on earth!"

Help!! I need a Celtic/Irish band for my Wedding in January. No 'callers' needed for dancing, but want plenty of fiddles, whistles, bharans etc. Please, is anybody out there?!

Don't forget Stone Free, who's new EP, Bicardi Rendezvous, is due for release in February next year!!

I have to agree that Radio Luxembourg are superb :)

The aberGWERINfolk is my favourite music organiation, bringing in quality acts from all over the UK and beyond. The Cwps provides a cosy venue with a no smoking policy on gig nights, people come specifically for the music, and it's small enough to be intimate. Perfect!

True Aber is a lovely place BUT... Why isn't anyone organising castle rock this year and why haven't you mentioned Fenks in the little review. THE greatest Aberystwyth band ever.

Why do the BBC practically overlook Radio Luxembourg in favour of The Poppies? My friends and I all believe that they are definitely the most innovative of the two post-Mozz bands but they seem to get ignored!

Can you tell me more about Rhiannon Sanders the Secretary of the Cardigan Pensioners Choir?

    Can anybody answer David's query?
