This photo of Albert Alexander Davies who owned the butchers at Montgomery during the first half of the twentieth century was bought to the BBC Wales Bus by his daughter Phyllis Price when the bus visited the town in April 2006.
"The picture is of my father Albert Alexander Davies known as 'Bert' or 'Bertie'. The boy pictured is my brother Evan Thomas Wilbert Davies.
My grandparents lived at the Chequers pub which was then adjacent to the butchers. In those days you could walk through from the pub to the butchers.
The Butchers employed a lot of people. Meat was delivered by horse and trap and later on they had a van."

My dad came from Montgomery, Raymond Poston and we used to visit the chequers as a child we visited uncle Stan who had the fish and chip shop across the road from chequers, also I can remember in the back yard of the pub was the slaughter house where I witnessed sheep being shot through the head ready to be prepared for the butchers shop.

My Great Grandmother's parents lived at ther Chequers - her maiden name was Davies. She married my grandfather Edward Coxon a butcher from Derbyshire. My mother Grace Coxon was very fond of her cousins in Wales. Sadly I've lost touch with all my Welsh relatives.
