My great aunt Winifred Morris lived at Vywnwy House, Meifod and I remember visiting her many times. She looked after her sister Mary Helen Price in her final years. She was my grandmother and died at Vywnwy House.I would appreciate hearing from Brian Morris and J Morris Williams who must be second cousins of mine. Thank you.David Price

My GGrandfather, John Foulkes was born in Croxon Row, Meifod. However, most of the family seem to be part of the Llanfyllin area for census purposes and I wonder if anyone can tell me where I could begin looking for graves belonging to the Foulkes Family? Is there just one cemetery for the whole area? I should be grateful for any help whatsoever as I hope to be visiting the area during the next week or so.

We used to spend most of the summer holidays at Meifod camping & fishing on the farm of Mr & Mrs Wilkinson, son Jonathan & daughter Kay & yes I do remember the RAF helicopter above our tents telling us to move to higher ground because the river had flooded. I remember dads car being a foot in water being towed by the farmer. Mr Wilkinson out of danger, Meifod is a fine village with which over the years i have been back to visit, i hope to go back fishing & camping with my own family great memories of this lovely place.

In the early 70's when I was a young teenager, my family used to spend its summer holidays on Mr. and Mrs. Jones Farm on the outskirts of Meifod in a caravan which dad pulled behind the big old Wolsey car. The last time we were there, in about 1972/3, we were very luckily rescued from the floods by a helicopter. Does anyone remember this please. Mr. and Mrs. Jones were so kind to us all - something which left a lasting impression, as did the beauty of the area. We met two lovely local boys, one named Chris (he had a birthmark on his face) and they shared their ponies with us. We were horse mad at that time and it was the best bit of the holiday for us. Happy memories!!

I remember a great family holiday in Meiford about 30 years ago. My dad spent most of it fishing the river there where a pike about 5foot long was supposed to live. I would love to take my own kids fishing there, where can I get day tickets?

I had relatives in the village, David and Sophie Edwards and their two children John and Barbara. I went there for my Summer holidays two years running when I was a kid around 1955 or so with my Mum Dad and brother. Uncle David was a dairy farmer. Still remember the village fondly. I also remember turning lines of hay with a pitchfork, gas lamps and evening games of cricket. Also remember Len. Is he still alive I wonder.

My mother and my brother and I spent the war years in Meifod living at the Kings head Hotel across from the church. I spent many happy years there and remember a school from Liverpool being evacuated there and the new school being built on the road to Dyfryn. Mr Humphreys was the school master and his wife taught there too. I got many a caning from him! Lots of happy memories.

My grandfather was taken to visit Meifod by his parents as an infant, around 1876, and the Woolham family carried on the tradition of visiting for at least the next 100 years. As a child I used to stay at Pentrego, before it had electricity or a mains water supply. Anyone interested in Meifod and its history should try to obtain "Meifod - A Century of Change", published to mark the Millenium. Try the British Library

I too remember visiting Great Aunt Florence Hughes in Meifod. There were tiny nibbling fish in the river by the old green painted iron bridge; her old stone floored cottage was up a few steps but used to flood and probably isn't there any more. There were odd waterfilled holes on top of the hill nearby and Flo told me they were "roman wells". Are they still there?

My Great, Grandfather James Hughes was born in Pontrobert, Wales in 1825. He served his apprenticeship as a Saddler and I think that he arrived in South Australia in 1849?. I have only been able to find out small pieces of information about him. I know that his Father's name was John Hughes and his Mothers maiden name was Mary Gittins. I was hoping that there may be some Hughes'or others still living in the area that may be able to help me find out more about my Great Grandfather.

In response to Jane Davies of Oswestry. I am unsure if there is a connection but I have family with the surname of Benbow (Ieuan Benbow who married Alice Edge) who lived in Meifod / Trefnanny and emigrated to Canada (Ontario) some time ago. I know they also have relatives in the Chirk / Gobowen area.

I was briefly in Meifod in 1975, couldn't stay longer because of family concerns. It was lovely. I was told that my great grandfather and family came from there to Iowa. I didn't see any Isaacs in the graveyard but was told by the store keeper that several Isaacs lived in the hills nearby. Can that be confirmed by anyone?

Just discovered in the 1881 Census that my great grandparents, David and Jane Benbow, farmed at Cwm, Meifod. It's my mum's 86th birthday this week, and I would love to take her to her father's, Edward Benbow, home for the very first time (if the present owners are willing). Can anyone help clarify if the Benbows were from Cwym farm or another?

My grandfather Thomas Edward Morris was born in or near Meifod around 1880 and his father was a Thomas Morris who also lived there at Vywnwy House below Broniarth Hill overlooking the valley and the village. The House was inherited by my Great Aunt Winifred Morris who lived there until she passed away in 1965 and was buried in the churchyard. My Grandfather moved to Liverpool before the WW1 where my father and I were born. I spent many happy holidays in Meifod in the 1950's often staying with Mrs Edwards who lived at Liverpool House next to the Bank

I am doing some research on my family and have several places in Wales to look for my family. One place is for Felin Y Forge Meifod, I was wondering if I am looking in the right in Wales. After reading some of the comments I came across The name of Pontrobert, so hopefully this is where I need to look. I am looking for William Evans who is said to com from this area, his wife Sarah is from Pontrobert. They came to the US in 1840 or 41 and lived in Ohio for awhile before moving to eastern Iowa and were some of the first settlers of Williamsburg Iowa. Williams folks and brother Evan D! Evans came from Cano LLanryhmair North Wales. If someone could let me know if I am on the right track.

I visited Meifod at the time of the Eistedfodd mainly to trace the birth place of my Grandfather David Charles Evans. His birth certificate gives Main Street in 1871 although the family were living at Fron Haul cottage which I believe is now named Bron Heulog. His Grandfather John Evans was baptised in the parish church in 1816. John's father was David Evans a farmer at Peniarth and his mother was a Mary Jones. Both are buried at Pont Robert.I had a few very enjoyable hours in Meiod including a pint in the local, a wander around the church, clean air and peace. If any local historian can throw any information my way I would be very grateful.

My great grandmother Eliza Mary Williams(?) lived in Meifod, she was born in 1892. I would be really grateful if anyone had any information about the family. She moved to London to go into service and married Joseph Russell, but returned to Meifod have her daughters at home. I know she had a sisters Gertie/Gertrude and Ruama (not sure of the spelling) and a brother Bill. Her parents had a small holding. My grandmother (Louisa) and great aunt (Beryl) returned home quiet a few times before they died. I hope to visit next summer with my tribe!

We have spent holidays in Meifod for 29 years. It is special place, beautiful, peaceful. We thought our daughters would give up on the holidays there but they continue to visit whenever possible. Anyone who has accommpanied our family has been enchanted by the place, and ask how we found our secret spot in Meifod (I am not telling you! But this farmer was still at school when we first started camping on his father's farm). This is the first year the fourth generation of our family visits Meifod, to play in the river Vyrnwy where mum and aunts learnt to swim.

I'm tracing my mother's family history. Does anyone have any info on Louisa Evans, born in Meifod, who married Henry George Secerson Tomlinson in October 1878 at the Parish Church. Her father was David, a Labourer and her mother possibly Ann Evans. Any ideas where they lived?

I have discovered that my grandfather, Samuel Breeze (1801-1876), ran the "Fighting Cock Inn" and that his daughter, Esther Rogers and her husband, John, took over by 1901, the inn then being called "The Cock". Does anyone know any history of this pub? I see that only one remains of the 3 pubs that used to be in Meifod. Any help would be wonderful; I'm not exactly round the corner to investigate in person!

I visited Meifod many times during the 60s & 70s to visit my Great Aunt Florence Hughes. She retired to Meifod in 1958 after working as a health visiter in Liverpool for 40 years. I can remember climbing the Dyffryn for a good view of the village and skimming stones in the Vyrnwy by the bridge. I was in Meifod the day England won the World Cup in 1966 and when Neil Armstrong walked on the Moon in July 1969. Unfortunately. although I only live about 100 miles away, I have never been back to Meifod since my Great Aunt died over 26 years ago. Having looked at this web site I think I must make the effort to go back some day soon.

I agree with me little bro above. Having moved away to the city these last 10 year or so, I often pine for Meifod's peace, beauty & friendliness! Since leaving, have appreciated the old place 10 fold, if you live there now or intend to....embrace it, it's a one off. Still try to get home regularly to No.8 (Sylv & Tony), not as often as I'd like. Good times were had by many and good times still ahead.

Having lived in Meifod all my life, (nearly 18 years) I think that Meifod is a quality place to live! Everyone in the village is really friendly and gets on really well, and Meifod Humour is the best in the world! Hi to all the Dogs, and the rest of the Meifod Crew!

My nan and grandad raised four girls and two boys in Meifod, one of which is my dad. They lived at Bryn y Groes until they were old enough to move out. They then moved to Welshpool. My dad met my mum and my Grandad passed away. When I was about 6 years old. Mum and Dad came back to live in Meifod. Few years after nan moved back to live next door to them. They still live there now, though I have moved out. They have always loved the peace and quiet of the village and the walks to go on. I think they will probibly live there for the rest of there life now.

My Gt. Gt. Grandfather was born in Meifod in 1805. His name was Hugh Evans. He married Mary Roberts from Llangedwyn, Denbighshire, and they raised their children in "Cae Dafydd" not far from the church, opposite Cae Robert. Hugh died in 1894 aged 89. Does anyone know if there is an old house/houses still standing there? Cae Dafydd means David's Field. I'm wondering who David was! I wish I could find out more about Hugh, but can't find his parents. I would love to have a look around the graveyard. I've looked at photos of Meifod and it's simply beautiful!

Meifod is a sacred site even to Christians... somewhere and everywhere in those encircling hillforts and lush wooded folds in the soft air of summer or the crisp of winter in a tiny primrose in a hedge or the massive volume of the valley and pulsing river there is a revelation in that place

I was born in Meifod in 1954, left in 1959 for Morda and WA in 1967. Spent 2 years closeby in 1992/3. I believe we had lived in the village since the 1850's. Relatives bones lie in the churchyard. For me as a child it was an introduction to rural life and ancient countryside. To a way of life and deep connection to identity with family, location and heritage. The church was where God lived and that God was the spirit of hedges and rabbits, of foxes and long nigh time, of pigeons in woods and bluebell groves beneath oak trees that generations of my family had cut. I have huge ties to Meifod even though most of us have died now, as time and all things pass. If you are ever up on Dyffryn Hill say hello to the spot for me. There are some holes on top of Dyffrynn Hill that look like they may have been where some standing stones were once? Any one know of this? They actually reminded me of GNAMMA holes which Aboriginal Tribes used to make in open granite outcrops in order to store some water. cya

Have discovered that my great grandfather must have been born here about 1830 but spent most of his married life in West Bromwich. What a culture shock it must have been. Evan Roberts would have been a young Wheelwright in the 1851 census. Has anybody got access? Think his family would have attended the Congregational Church. Will visit one day

"Here it is to be" is one translation of "Meifod" and who could argue with the sentiment! Christened in Meifod Church 60 years ago and with a long association with the village I finally returned to live here in 1991. After travelling the world during a long naval career I do not know of a better place to live.
