Talking Point - The need for speed?

Car

Last updated: 02 January 2008

Campaigners have accused 'boy racers' of using Machynlleth as a race track. Do you think speed cameras should be installed in the market town?

Sean Jones from Llanbrynmair speaks out for the 'boy racers'.

Sean:"I don't think that we needd speed cameras. I am a boy racer from mach and I do think there should be more police but there needs to be a place where we can go and be left alone to do what we like doing."

Delyth Humphreys from Machynlleth has suggested the following change:

Delyth:"Maybe they could put sleeping police men around the town, that would probably slow the racers down."

Lee Jones from Aberystwyth has some novel ideas to handle the perceived problem.

Lee:"I don't think there should be speed cameras. What I do think there should be is more police presence and a facility for people to send in video evidence to the police and for the police to actually act on that evidence. Stronger penalties and a restriction for the 1st year of driving to 1000cc, no passengers allowed (unless they have been driving for more than 1 year), but also for 'P' plates to be compulsory for that 1st year."

Delyth from Machynlleth has no doubts about where she stands on this issue:

Delyth"I agree we need speed cameras in Mach. The speed of the cars around the town is frightening. There will be a tragedy. One day someone will be hurt."
