Moving to Mach

Church of the Spilled Blood in St Petersburg

Last updated: 29 December 2005

Read the impressions of two teenagers who recently moved to Machynlleth. Ilya Day used to live in St Petersburg while Ryan Hoskin grew up in Laugharne. They're both now pupils at Ysgol Bro Ddyfi.

    From Russia to Wales
by Ilya Day from Ysgol Bro Ddyfi

I began my big journey to Wales from Pulkovo airport in Russia near St. Petersburg. Before I arrived I thought Britain would be much more interesting, e.g. more channels on the TV.

In St Petersburg, I used to eat soup and more soup. The soup was made out of potatoes, meat, carrots and whatever we had. Here, I eat roast dinner: meat and two veg.

In St Petersburg, I used to drink tea without milk. Here, I drink Coke, and Sprite. I never drink tea with milk: it's disgusting!

St Petersburg is a very cultured city with many museums and galleries. I used to live in a seventh floor flat with a balcony where we used to grow some flowers. Here, I live in a house with a garden in Corris.

I prefer living in a flat with a balcony because I used to imagine I could fly like the birds.

My favourite thing in school is the computer room. I like Ysgol Bro Ddyfi a bit more than my school in Russia - the teachers aren't so strict, because they are paid more!

I want to be an RAF pilot when I leave school.

We came to Machynlleth 30 years ago in october. The children all grew up here. The pace of life seemed ever so slow after living in a city and a busy large town.We soon adjusted though. It was the best move we ever made .The whole family is still here with their own families now and we wouldnt want to live anywhere else. Everyone makes you so welcome .Dont worry about the language, you will get by and the grandchildren help out anyway.!!Thankyou to all in Mach for 30 happy years (and many more to come we hope )We have many visitors who love the scenery here and the town and surrounding areas ,they dont want to leave.

I moved to Machynlleth in 2004. I moved from Aberystwyth - but I am a German who has moved to Wales (first to Cardiff)in 2000. I find it hard meeting other young people who have the same interest as I have. I like the Quarry Cafe in Mach. I speak Welsh but I do not hear much Welsh being spoken in Machynlleth really. The cars go too quickly through Machynlleth. I find it dangerous. I find cycling difficult, too, because there are no tracks and on the way to the CAT the farmer keeps his cows. I also agree with Lembit Öpik that Machynlleth could be tidier. Celtica looks so shabby now.Met some friendly people here. The Spectrum Gallery sells very good products - so does Ian Snow. That's what I like here.

Seriously considering moving to Mach but am hesitating as I don't speak Welsh and wonder how that will affect my employment prospects.

I lived in Mach from 1948 to 1960 when I went off and joined the Royal Navy. My parents continued to live in Mach at No 9 Caecrwn until 1972 when they moved to Plymouth to be near us. Sadly my Dad died 2 years later aged 67, but my Mum Gwen lived on for another 22 years to the grand age of nearly 83. Mach will always be my home, I loved all my years there and made some great friends. Still remember all my old mates and neighbours, my school teachers even Joyce Fleming my junior school dinner lady. I hope Joyce is still there i'm coming back soon to say hello, I hope her brother Charlie is around too. We have a lot to catch up on, what a great Goal Keeper he could have been. See you soon Mach.
