"The Festival opens to the public at 10am with the official opening at
11am.
This year Lady Milena Grenfell-Baines will be opening the
Festival and participating in the activities.
It is 70 years since Milena came to Britain being one of the children rescued by Sir Nicholas Winton.
Milena was sent to the Czechoslovak School in Whitchurch in
1941 and the School was moved to the Abernant in Llanwrtyd Wells in
1943.
Milena became a children's nurse, au paired in France in the early
fifties, and married Sir George Grenfell-Baines, who was the founder of
the architectural firm Building Design Partnership.
Food has long been one of Lady Milena's interests and she will be demonstrating a pan at the Festival.
There are a series of chef demonstrations throughout the day given by
Nick Davies (Cambrian Training), Mary Ann Gilchrist (Carlton Riverside
Restaurant), Lady Milena Grenfell-Baines (demonstrating with remoska
pan delicious Czech recipes), Roger Stevens (Lasswade Country Hotel),
Arwyn Watkins and Nick Davies (Cambrian Training Company and The
Welsh Culinary Team), Christiane Dappe (Meriel Twinning Association -
fine French food with flare), Chris Challener (Radio Wales Food Critic).
David Burridge, well-known local forager, will be showing you how to
make the most of wild food found in the hedgerows.
Builth Male Voice Choir and Builth Wells Ladies Voice Choir will be singing, Irfon Valley Tappers and Zautosompers (French Jazz Band) will be providing music, as will Dolafon Band.
The Festival is sponsored by Charcroft Electronics (a local firm with a
sense of community), the Welsh Assembly Government, Farmers Union
Wales, Powys County Council, Welsh Country magazine (who have a
stand in the Craft Hall), Arriva trains (who will be running special trains
between Swansea and Shrewsbury on the day), Brains Beer, JBH
Supplies, Event Signs and Tanners Wines.
Nestled in the heart of Wales, Llanwrtyd Wells is the 'smallest town in
Britain' situated between Builth Wells and Llandovery on the A483. The
town prides itself on giving visitors a warm Welsh welcome and the local
restaurants, hotels and pubs enter into the spirit of the occasion,
providing a wide selection of real ales and quality liqueurs and offering a
range of food to suit all palates and budgets too.
The Festival is not only about the one day, it's about marketing local
products to restaurants, chefs and the public to give the best
opportunity to gain sustained support.
Llanwrtyd Wells is a real 'foodie'area with a variety of renowned chefs. It is not surprising that Lasswade Country House Restaurant in Llanwrtyd Wells were awarded the UK Champions 2008 "Sustain Food Challenge", purchasing from local farmers and producers.
As well as Lasswade, Mary Ann Gilchrist, a Michelin award chef, provides meals at the Carlton Riverside. And Peter James' award winning team's Drovers' Restaurant is popular with all.
