Festival Fever

Crwods gather at Llanwrtyd's World Bog Snorkelling Championship Llanwrtyd Wells may be Britain's smallest town but every year it hosts a dozen different festivals - from the World Bog Snorkelling championship to the Man versus Horse race and the Real Ale Wobble.

The town's major events are organised by the Green Events company which was set up to attract tourists into the town in all seasons. Gordon Green is the chairman and he tells the story of how it all began.

"In 1979, a Tourism Association for Llanwrtyd Wells was started. The objective of this Association was to improve the economy by marketing events of the Town.

One of the objectives was to organise a new event each year, especially during the tourism' off-season'.The first event organised was the Man Versus Horse Marathon in 1980. This was followed by The Welsh International Four Day Walks in 1981, and the Drovers Walk in 1982. Now a total of 12 events are organised annually.

In 2001 it was decided that these events should be organised by a Company, and Green Events Limited was incorporated. The aims and objectives of Green Events Ltd. are to promote the unique events which Llanwrtyd Wells have to offer to a global audience, to give all of our visitors the fun, satisfaction and pleasure in everything we do and to bring back our visitors time and time again

Mid Wales Beer Festival

The Mid Wales Beer Festival festival now in its 19th year is supported by CAMRA and is held in the various free houses of the town.

There is an entertainment programme throughout the week, this includes a Male Voice Concert on the 20th November which is the traditional Ffairbont Day.

This is a wonderfully friendly festival. On the first weekend there is a Real Ale Wobble for mountain bikes and there is also a Real Ale Ramble for walkers in the second weekend.

The Real Ale Wobble is a non-competitive mountain bike weekend with a choice of 15,25 or 35 miles each day. All routes are waymarked and there will be free beer at all check points. Rides are mainly on farm land and forest tracks, paths or open country, and as there is free beer on the rides all routes will be off-road.

In conjunction with the Mid Wales Beer Festival the Real Ale Ramble is non-competitive with a choice of distances of 10, 15 or 25 miles each day. All walks are waymarked, and there will be free beer at check points.

The routes will be mainly on farm or forestry tracks, paths or minor roads. Each person who completes the distance will be awarded the appropriate medal and there will be cloth badges on sale throughout the ramble duration."

Yes, there's a great event for Morris dancers every July (first weekend in the month). We call it Morris in the Forest. It's based on a 9-mile walk in the woods, with an impromptu (and out-of-costume) dancing event at the half-way stop for refreshments. Morris in the Forest! Geddit? But there's also two ceilidhs, a Morris procession along the A483, late-night (um, early morning) music sessions in a local pub, and about 3 hours of actual morris dancing in the town square on the Sunday. Email me if you want details for 2005. I'm bhc@derwendeg.wanadoo.co.uk

I have heard that you hold a Morris dance or Folk Festival in June or July, can you tell me more?

If you've ever taken part in one of Llanwrtyd's more unusual festivals, get in touch and we'll add your stories to the site.
