One of the most distinctive features of Llanidloes is its range of timber-framed buildings. You can find out more about these buildings by visiting a permanent exhibition which is held in the town's Old Market Hall. The exhibition is open during Easter, then from mid-May to the end of September every year. Alternatively take our photo tour written by Dr Charles Kightly and Caroll Davies.
The stone walled medieval parish church has two notable timber features. The timber-framed, weather boarded belfry topping the tower, characteristic of the central Welsh Borders, has recently been tree-ring dated to around 1595.
The magnificent timber "Angel Roof" of the interior, surmounting the beautiful early 13th century stone pillars and arches brought here from the dissolved monastery of Abbey Cwm Hir in 1542, was once thought also to have come from the monastery. But tree-ring analysis has proved that it was purpose-built for this church in about 1542: it may well be the last of its kind ever constructed in Britain.
The church is normally open 10.30am - 3.00pm Mon-Sat: open on Sundays for services only, to which all are welcome.
