Just returned from visiting Llanfyllin in search of my Jones roots !, very helpful in the library !. Found my GGGrandfather Henry was born in Cefn Gribbin a farm in the hills of llanfyllin, however was unable sadly to find his grave, he was "accidently killed"on his death certificate ! in 1868 aged 39 and was a post boy ? !.Someone else was looking for the Jones family from Cefn Gribbin on these boards !.

My GG Grandparents John & Mary Williams, (nee Roberts) lived in Llanfylin. On the 1851 census John was a slater, (his parents were Richard & Sarah) & they had 2 children, Harry & Mary Ann.By 1871 Mary was using the name 'Jane' and they had another 4 children, Sarah, Elizabeth, Robert & Anne.It appears that John died, 1870/71 & 'Jane' then appears married on the 1881 census to Elijah Davies and had children, Jane, Frances & Joseph Davies. I think that Elijah died in 1898.I would be very greatful if anyone has any information relating to Mary as I ! can't find any of her marriage records! Thanks x

My great, great grandfather, William Bente came to the Llanfyllin area from Germany in the 1850s and worked on the railways. He married Sarah Roberts, who was born in Llanymynnech,in Kinnerly in 1859. They lived in Pendre, Llanfyllin, for 20 years until 1885 and had 3 children, Sophia, Mary Jane and Frederick. In 1881 Mary Jane, my great great grandmother, was employed as a servant by David Holmes Evans, a Draper and Grocer living a 90 High Street. She met William Moss whom she later married. I wonder if any reader knows anything about William Moss, who was described as a "Gentleman" ! on my grandmother's birth certificate?

Kane Edwards asks about her "Uncle Morgan" in Oswestry. I remember him very faintly from when I was a child in the 50's. I remember the names - "Uncle Morgan and Auntie Beattie" and his being an auctioneer more than the actual people. I don't know if they were actually related or just an "honorary" aunt and uncle to my mother, They are mentioned in the newspaper report of my great grandmother's funeral in Rhiwlas, 1953.

I stumbled upon this very full resource when I typed in Llanfyllin this evening, after trying to learn again the Welsh and Welsh songs/hymns I once knew some 60 years ago, when my stepgrandmother,Margaret Ann Enion nee Evans,of the Railway Station in the 1920s and 1930s,took me to see her home village of Llanfyllin in 1950,1951 and 1952.I later visited in 1960 and 1963,finding little changed, but (as it was a day ride)fewrelatives still alive.I have learned much about Llanfyllin from this website and hope to learn more - diolch am eich neges.

My Grandmother Sarah Evans (nee Meredith) came from Llanfyllin, she worked at the Chemist, and I know her father was a hedge layer' and he died in the work-house. I believe there were 6 children two boys and three girls. Her sister Maggie, lived in Llanfyllin and raised her family there! My husband John came from Llansantffraid. "Trewylan Dairy".I hope to visit Llanfyllin again when we come over next Spring, each time we visit Wales we always take a trip to this (olde World) town, where my roots were established many years ago!Has any-one any information regarding the Meredith Family, my uncle Glyn (Ruabon) is compiling a 'Family Tree', and I am about to start taking this 'fascinating' journey back in time! Also does any-one remember my uncle Morgan Evans he was the auctioneer in Llanrhaeadr - Oswestry and Glynceriog! His son David took the business over after Morgan passed away, alas David too has since died. I remember 'Uncle Morgan' being quite the character, and most of the farmers in the area knew him!

Great site - am researching my ancestors - so good to get a feel of life in Wales, especially Llanfyllin where Isaac Jones was in business, in the 1800's. Thank you.
