Japanese Garden

Last updated: 24 November 2005

While doing National Service in Korea in the 1950s, Myles Roberts from Llanfyllin spent part of his leave in Tokyo in Japan. His visit to the capital inspired him to create his own Japanese-style garden when he returned home to Montgomeryshire. Click through some pictures of his horticultural homage to the orient...

Myles: "Whilst on leave in Tokyo I picked up a postcard depicting a scene in a park and an interesting pagoda structure and I said to myself one day I'm going to build that and I did!"

I also visit this place on a saturday morning to reflect upon my life. I moved here with my boyfriend in 2004 and I find Llanfyllin an amazing place. Amara and I visit here on a friday afternoon aswell when we get time off work. Amara loves this place!

I love this place, after the bushes its a second home to me. The flower arrangements are amazing and I take refuge here when times in Llanfyllin are tough. I recommend more bushes are planted if any ideas are required.

I love the gardens because they tell me something that i hear from nobody else. They talk to me in a spiritual way, I feel in a state of ecstacy when I see them. I love things like this. They bring the community togher as one.

Wow! Basically sums up this pagoda! Really good to see some pagodas! Life is all about a pagoda and I recommend the Welshpool plant centre 2 but it is by Iceland of course!

Pete in Tokyo
I went to school in Llanfyllin and now live in Tokyo. I think this garden looks pretty good when compared to the ones I see here on a daily basis. But if Myles wants an authentic Japanese Acer or Bonsai, I'd like to recommend Welshpool plant centre, (near Kwik Save) where my father would be more than happy to serve him! Gambatte Roberts sama!

What do you think of Myles' Japanese-style garden? Are you a keen Mid Wales gardener? Does your garden have a theme? Send us your themed garden pictures and we'll add them to the site!
