With the talk of drugs on every corner and very little for the young 'uns to do I have come up with the perfect idea to alleviate these 2 problems.I propose a 3 month long music festival superceding the well-overdue-an-overhaul Victorian Festival. During these 3 months the young uns will have plenty to do, local businesses would thrive catering for the whims of festival goers and as everyone knows festy-goers would soon consume the vast quantities of illicit substances found around Llandod.Do I win a prize for this inspired piece of thinking?

I've lived here on & off for most of my life. I love the town & find myself being 'sucked' back, it really is a beautiful place to live especially when my other 'home' is in a over-developed city. ...aesthetics aside; the town really needs help, or the younger generation do at least. There's absolutely nothing for them to do except walk the streets, drink & get themselves involved in the drugs scene that in itself is a massive problem in the town. If the mayor popped that little bubble of his & acutally listened to the locals & made an effort with the younger ones, he might realise there's a problem & that a few changes and something to occupy the kids in the evenings would make a huge difference! There's no work for them so the only way to be independant in the town is to go on the dole, have kids & let the council pay for everything; thats not a guess....i know too many people who live that way, its such a shame because most of them are so bright & incredibly intelligent & could be such a great asset to any business in the town if it was allowed to come to Llandod...

I used to live in Llandrindod and i visit as oftern as i can as i have family there. I think the improvments made to the town are fantastic and well done to all those (especially MRB) who have put a huge amount of effort into making Llandod an attractive and enjoyable place to visit.

The exercise equipment in Rock Park has already been vandalised; the weights have been removed from one side of one of the machines located behind the bowling Greens. The price of metal these days will always tempt the vermin in our midst, especially when expensive equipment is left unattended. Oh well, what does it matter if £30,000 is squandered. The Council obviously has plenty of funds to waste...

Well, I have seen everything now! All of us are so stupid, it seems, it is necessay to place "footprints" on the footpaths of Rock Park to tell us where to go !! Or maybe they are intended for lost dogs to indicate where their masters went. I'm sorry, but we must become the laughing-stock of all who visit Llandod. Why not spend that money on identity tags for the variety of trees and other flora that grow in the park - or maybe a few extra simple bench seats and a few small shelters for when it rains. The aim should be to enhance the beauty of the Park, not mutilate it with grotesque features that have recently been installed. By the way, have any bats taken up residence in the boxes provided last year? Maybe they have been frightened off by all the Llandoddies doing press-ups at night on the exercise exquipment now located in the the Park. Actually I did see a few councellors visiting recently, lauding the presence of this equipment, but none actually using it. What is good is the excellent job done in restoring the cobbled surface of the bridge next to the waterfall. A good example of preserving what is there, not changing it!

Llandrindod Wells is a lovely town. I moved here last year and have never lived anywhere so safe and friendly. I moved here from Liverpool. I'll walk out at night, don't fear going in any pubs or the nightclub and trust most people here. The people who are moaning about the park's sculptures are just grumpy. They were made by the local schoolchildren and it's things like that that I love about small towns. People here matter and creativity is encouraged. We have a shop on one main street here dedicated to the art works of people with learning disabilities too but nobody has mentioned that. Before anyone writes off Llandrindod, just come here and witness and experience how human and diverse and accepting the people here are.

Llandrindod's rock park is place of natural beauty and tranquility. I love to walk through admiring natures wonderful presence there. Now it seems to have been turned into some sort of theme park! What ever were the planning departments thinking of allowing the ugly machines to be placed around the park? Do these projects get public consultation? Are the plans for this type of project in our local paper for the towns people to read about and object to if need be? All there is are A4 sheets of paper which can hardly be read by us, as the type face is so small and fades after a week. They're also well-hidden so you could miss them.
Tue Feb 19 16:55:35 2008

Sue Contestabile, Llandrindod Wells
Why place one of these awful machines on a tennis court? I have seen many people using that court and all it needed was a clean up and new net. Far more people use that court than will use that piece of equipment, and I know what I would prefer. Tennis is a game that is available to people of all ages, shapes and sizes. That machinery can only be used safely by people of a certain weight, height and age. Along with the other examples of 'exercise' equipment around the rock park we will wait and see how long it lasts before it ends up broken, vandalised etc. What's next on the rock park agenda I wonder, cut down the trees and replace them with plastic ones?

Visiting friends in Llandrindod Wells several times a year some of my visits coincide with the Victorian festival, I have seen the same entertainment year upon year, upon year. Reading the comments from locals on here I can see why the Victorian festival is not a hit with them, it must be like living groundhog day! Visitors numbers to the festival have fallen, probably because of the static, stale, selection of entertainment on offer. Time to change agenda don't you think Llandrindod Wells. I for one am fed up to the back teeth of the same tired offering.

...Soon every space in Llandrindod will be taken up with these silly excesses machines. When they go rusty, get vandalised, or God forbid someone has an accident on the equipment and there is a claim against Powys county councils insurance because it is dangerous, not been maintained properly, the equipment will be taken down and scrapped! (I will love to say I told You so) Oh dear what it is to have a little foresight mmmmmm!
Thu Feb 7 09:21:15 2008

Llandrindod is a beautiful town and yes there are also many things that need improving. I'm just wondering whose ingenious idea introduced the 'exercise equipment', particularly the idea of placing it in the only free tennis court available...

I agree entirely with the sentiments expressed by Mrs G Baker, and Janet of Llandod, about the ghastly objects erected in Rock Park, so totally out of keeping with the Park's natural beauty. I see that the seats located next to the waterfall have already attracted morons with their paint spray cans (for the second time) and worst of all graffiti that has been scratched into the wood, impossible to erase. This outcome, although despicable, is hardly surprising. The money would have been better spent on renovating existing park benches and adding a few more where the scenery can be admired. Incidenta! lly, as a daily user of the Park, I have yet to see anybody actually sitting on these "seats", only adults looking at the curiosities and kids using them as climbing frames! Now we have a new eye-sore being erected in at least two locations - EXERCISE EQUIPMENT would you believe, costing many thousands of £s - for whom?? I look forward to seeing little old ladies walking their dogs, stopping to do a few press-ups en route!! I hope the Council has adequate insurance against injuries that might be sustained by those, if any, that may use the facility. Sensible exercise is done under supervision, so I hope an appropriate warning notice will be raised at these sites.

The park has many memories for me, as a child, mother and now a grandmother. I wanted to write this letter to ask council etc who's job it is to manage and look after this beautiful park. Future plans should be looked at very carefully before giving the go ahead for constructions of any kind in the park. These factors are the main priority for the park: Tree management, re replanting, shrubs and undergrowth , paths and walkways, river the Ithon and its banks. It is the job of Powys county council and other organisations to insure the parks future survival.I am very disappointed by the council and planning departments for allowing the tacky wooden sculptures to be erected in the park. Not only are they unsightly to look at, they are unsightly in the environment in which they have been placed. A tree will last a life time unlike those tacky wooden eye sores, which probably have a shelf life of ten years. And at what cost? Some idiots got together and wondered how they could waste several thousand pounds, what a waste of money for the town.

While out walking the dog in the park, I stopped to look at the chairs that are causing some concerns with local people. Standing there admiring the environment around me in which the chairs are situated, my dog lifted his leg and began urinating against one of the chairs. I am sure dogs can read your mind? Or maybe my dog was telling me what he thought of the horrible, ugly chairs! Who knows? I met some Scottish people in the park who were on bus tour, staying in Llandrindod for a few days. I asked them what they thought of the chairs. I cannot repeat what some of the people said as it would not get printed on here, but they came to the same conclusion as my dog and myself, they did not like the chairs was there opinion or words to that effect! Also I see the vandals have started to put their mark on the hideous chairs, obvious they would sooner or later.

I to don't understand why it is necessary to close off Middleton Street during the Victorian festival. There is not enough parking spaces in Llandrindod, to close off Middleton street makes no sense at all. The wife and myself went into Llandrindod we needed to go to the shops in Middleton street and like that lady said on here were stopped from entering the street. The wife is not very good on her legs, and we like to park out side the shops if we can. I could not find any where at all to park, it was hell just driving about the town looking for a parking spaces, in the end we gave up and went home. Next day we went to Builth to get out shopping. So it must be right the shops in Landidndod loose customers, because of the street being closed off. I will complain to the County Council about Middleton street being closed off and hope others will do the same.

Dear Chris, Pat lived and worked in the area when she was involved with the Llandoddies. She has now moved back to America but all the time she was in Llandrindod, her contribution to the town has always been positive, which is more than can be said from some of the contributors to this site

The researcher Pat Welch lives in America on what basis was her research for this Llandoddie? I thought it was a made up creature. And how is it possible for a person to be on an economic regeneration group action team for Llandrindod, when they do not live in Llandrindod but live in America? If a person does not live in llandrindod how can they have any say or influence in the affairs of Llandrindod town?

I have read every letter in all sections of this Llandrindod site. The more disagreeable letters make interesting reading. Councillors who got your votes, must read the comments on here and realise the discontent amongst Llandrindod people.

Having read the comments about the art pieces in the park, I yesterday visited the rock park to see for myself. I can now understand why people are strongly against the art structures, I felt the art pieces looked out of place in the park environment. My memories of walking through Llandrindod's magnificent park and down to the river have now been shattered. The impact of the art seating, left me feeling angry, upset, and sad, in fact I would call it institutionalised vandalism. I live in Herefordshire but lived in Llandrindod for over 52 years. Hello to all who remember me.

1.Who gave the go ahead for the chairs in the park? 2.Did the monstrosities as they have been called have planning permission? 3.Were Llandrindod towns people asked their opinion on the chairs? 4.Whose idea was it to place the chairs at this particular beauty spot? 5.Can the offending chairs be moved else where? 6.Can we have a guarantee that any future plans for such works, have the opinions and views, from the people of the town, and not of a few who are at peasant making up our minds for us.

If certain people don't like the complaints they read on here tuff!Do certain people think we towns folk will not speak up about issues we don't agree with? Do certain people want us towns folk to keep quiet, and not speak our minds on issues that concern us and our town? I for one am going to exercise my right to speak my mind by telling those certain people, The ugly, grotesque, chairs, should never have been allowed next to the beautiful waterfall. If you don't like complaints, tuff!

Even if it means making mistakes with our town, the park is one mistake too far! Why the need to add these awful art works in the park? For pity sake leave the park alone! The Victorians planted the park for future generations to enjoy, a stunning landscape with trees, water, flowers, birds. Their vision is wonderful a place to walk and see natural beauty, for us to admire. I wonder what they would think if they came back today...
Wed Sep 26 10:56:42 2007

Melissa, Llandrindod
Those “monstrosities” as you called them were designed by locals in the town and have been widely used and enjoyed by locals and tourists alike. Yes people come to enjoy the beauty but they need somewhere to sit and enjoy it and nice chairs are much more appealing than just an ordinary bench. I have also talked to several tourists whilst I was in the Rock Park and they had nothing but praise for the town and expressed their liking of the art work in the town. You blatantly have no idea about what the town needs, those mad ideas are what’s bringing money and people into the town and if you have so much to complain about maybe you should give some ideas and do something constructive instead of winging on the internet.

Peter Cross and Sue Contestabile's words eco my feelings about the Rock park, such a lovely place to walk and take in the natural scenery. Had known about these ugly seats were to be placed next to the beautiful waterfall in the Rock park, I would have objected very strongly to the council. Leave our park alone for goodness sake don't erect any more ugly art woks. Our park is a wonderful natural place that is art of its own.

When will M R Blees wake up to reality? The criticisms he camplains of are not of the town but of the likes of him who have no real conception of the needs of the town. Wasting money on weird seats at two locations in Rock Park are eye-sores that do not attract visitors, only undisciplined youths with their spray cans! People, both local and tourists, visit the parks for exercise and relaxation, absorbing the natural beauty of the area, its flora, bird life and scenic views. Visitors do not come to Llandod to see the monstrosities, created in the name of art, that have been erected! totally out of keeping with their surrounds. And the latest mad idea? The construction of "3 exercise areas" hidden away in the undergrowth of Rock Park, at a cost of at least £30,000! God help us !!

So how is it 2007 has more lottery money for the same project? Could the Lottery money not be spent on charities that need it.

Hope the folks in Llandrindod don't mind me saying this, but we have seen the towns decline for a number of years such a shame too it is a lovely part of Wales. Calling in on Llandrindod on our way back from holiday was a pleasure for us, we have been stopping off in Llandrindod for more years than I wish to remember in our camper van, with our children and now grandchildren. This year August 2007 we were shouted at, and had our camper van kicked, and spat on whilst parked at the lake side by yobs who were drinking, some of their group could not have been more then ten years old. They m! ade folks life hell who were enjoying the peace and tranquillity. The grandchildren were worried and frightened we had to move the camper van on to a new spot when the yobs came back for another kick and spit at our camper van. . A man walking his dog told us that Llandrindod has got a problem with kids vandalising cars, property and underage drinking. Also we don't know what has happened to the Victorian festival these past few years. I feel that the spirit has gone from the festival there is something missing. This year's entertainment was very poor we felt, with not much happening around the streets . Can the festival do more to include its town's folk I wonder?

May I remind those visitors to the town who write about how much they enjoy their visits to Llandrindod and how quaint our town is, and don't change the town. How would you like to live here 12 months of the year, and have to travel 40 miles each direction for household goods, clothes, and the like, you can't even buy a pair of sheets or children's clothes in Llandrindod. You try living here and I am sure it will soon change your view.

Come on you folks you could learn from these people.

You get your facts wrong M. Blees assuming I hadn't visited the town hall to view projects on display, a family members project work I went there to view. I stick to my last letter printed on here No Need For Art Works around the town. The small shops that may be leased in Llandrindod will be run by the owners and usually one or two family members, how many jobs do you really think these small shops, etc. can provide? After many millions of pounds spent on the face lift for Llandrindod, hopefully the small shops that do get used won't be Charity or Gift shops, Cafes, Estate agents, etc. Llandrindod people need shops we can actually go and buy from why do you think Llandrindod is empty on Saturdays? Take a look at how many factories are located in Newtown Welshpool, etc. Llandrindod need these types of jobs. Don't rely on the very few holiday season jobs of which most are taken up by immigrant workers. Investment in industry for the future of Llandrindod is the way ahead not looking into the past, can the council not see what the people of the town can?
Thu Sep 6 09:18:18 2007

Sue Contestabile... you get your facts wrong. This “do-gooder” put together a Regeneration Plan fo Llandrindod Wells, which has been adopted by Powys County Council. As a result of this plan buildings are being restored and a variety of development plans given the go-ahead; all providing considerable work and income for local businesses. Five major development projects were on display in the old Town Hall building during Victorian Week; what a shame you didn’t come to see for yourself. The Town Council has pushed and fronted many of the youth development in the town; the skate-board ramp and the Lake Park play area are evidence of that. The stunning sculptured seats by the Chalybeate spring are designed by one of our High School students and form part of a growing number of sculptures that enhance our tourist product, yet again ensuring more income for our town. The new Victorian Festival committee only had some 6 months to put the festival together and I, and many others think they have done a remarkable job.

Llandod is ok sometimes but most of the time there is nothing to do. It would be cool if there was an ice-rink or something really fun for people to do!

S. Contestabile, Llandrindod Wells
M. Blees telling us sculptures are good for the town? The ones in the park are situated right next to a natural beautiful waterfall, you have spoilt a lovely spot by allowing theses ugly chairs to be placed there. People take photographs at this waterfall because of its beauty. Who ever thought up allowing these ugly sculptures to be placed in the park? Need to have a re think! Llandrindod needs investment yes, its jobs we need not grants for sculptures, fountains, art works etc! People of Llandrindod are totally fed up with do gooders, telling us what they think is good for the town. Yes people are being attacked in the town, latest a case only last week. Yes drugs are freely available in the town, incidents involving drugs making head line news in local and international press is proof of this, or are you saying its all lies?Amsterdam, well most people who go to Amsterdam go for the drugs, sex, etc. they are very liberal out there on most things come to think about it. Lets hope Llandrindod will not be remembered as being the same!
Wed Aug 1 12:20:10 2007

M. R. Blees
I’m getting totally irritated by people running Llandrindod down, often people that do not live here at all. The past 6 years the town has all been about development, regeneration plans, lottery grants, improved parks, introduction of sculptures etc. Buildings are being restored all over the town, sculptures appear in the parks including a massive new fountain in the Lake, new play areas for the kids etc, etc, etc. Are you being offered drugs on every street corner? NO! Are you being attacked at night? NO! Llandrindod is a most beautiful historical town with a very versatile community. The town has no more or less problems than any town of its size. When I studied in Amsterdam there were more drugs in the street then there are in the whole of Radnorshire, it didn’t stop people coming to or living in Amsterdam. People that claim that Llandrindod is the “drugs capital” in Powys need to get a life. Stop running the town down! Instead get involved with the many volunteers who are working tirelessly in making the town better.

I left llandrindod 19 years ago because I could not continue in business due to the council allowing supermarkets in to town. I visit rarely and over the years the decline has been rapid. Drugs, unemployment and general apathy is a cloud hanging over this once proud town, it is time for locals to get off their backside and do something constructive instead of letting interlopers run the town for you. If you don't, the town will destroy itself and no amount of victorian festivals will save it. You need something to keep the youngsters in town and involve them in the decision making, listen to the youngsters they are trying to tell you something.
Mon Jul 23 14:18:21 2007

Helen, Powys
It is so sad that Llandrindod has such a bad name mainly to do with drugs and unemployment as I think it is a lovely town with a great Victorian history. I have heard it referred to as "the drug capital of Wales" by a person who has never been there but this is the perception some people within Powys have even though they have never been there. What it needs is more industry and activities for the young people, the council needs to shake itself up, not be so narrow minded and begin to change the perception of Llandrindod and help show people what a great town it is.
Mon Jul 2 09:17:14 2007

Peter C from Crossgates
Llandod offers many beautiful areas to see - Rock Park, The Lake, Shakey Bridge and various other parts of the River Ithon. The springs are over-rated, a hangover from Victorian times. If you read the literature about them, you realise the hype that has been generated to make money - landowners charging for samples of nature's gifts. So what is there to do after you have had your daily walk in the parks and done your shopping? When is the council going to consider seriously long term projects and investment to promote the town to the outside world. The yearly Victorian parade is a farce but the area has ample space for developing various sports and activities to national or even international standards - equestrian events, swimming, shooting, fishing to name a few, to augment the excellent Bowls and Golf facilities already existing. The town is in dire need of entertainment facilities - for example: indoor bowling, tennis, badminton, squash, Cinema & modern Theatre, Disco, Gocarting, Archery and many other options. Come on Llandod, join the 21st century! Only if the Council makes a plan will the necessary investment be forthcoming.

I grew up in a very rural area near Llandod, where there was nothing to do at all.So you make your own fun, you don't cause trouble and you make the best of what you have. For goodness sake parents and kids shape up. If you only got off your lazy backsides you would find jobs and you would find loads of stuff to do. Your problem is that you are all waiting for it to be handed to you on a plate and the labour party seem to be very good at dishing it all to you.Wake up and appreciate what you have, dont ruin it.Do you really want to turn llandod into some sort of inner city dive?

People moan there are no decent shops but they are not using the ones that are on offer.Instead a lot of people are buying online or just using shops for free advice and information.A lot of high street shops all over the Uk will close not just in Llandrindod wells, you cannot pay rent and wages on free conversation. Its fair enough for people to buy on line if something is cheaper but they should give local shops a try first! Some shops can beat the internet if you let them........

think the victorian festival should be held in the place where the town was origioally built around. the rock park, llandrindodis bestknown to people cause of the festival, and the history of the spar, no not where i work lol. the spar water. unsure about whatactually happens in the building in the rock park? but if the rock park held the festival there.then the building could be done up and made to look like it should be there. its a great old building but looks likeit was last painted in the victorian era. the reason landod is here is the spa, so lets remind people. its a beautiful open space and how many%! 20people actually know about it. yeah we know the lake, but i think the river is more intresting and with a bit of effort it could be tidied up. at the moment itlooks like the school kids and people returning from the chippy are using it as a dusbin. whats everyone think.

Llandrindod has beautiful scenery and seeems reasonably unspoilt. I grew up there but left many years ago. What it lacks, it seems to me, are decent and affordable leisure facilities - e.g. a cinema; some decent eating spots; public tennis courts, a swimming pool and most of all for afficionados like me - a croquet lawn!

I love to walk my dog around the lake in Llandrindod when I am up visiting but think the "monster" in the lake is absolutely awful!! I am an amateur artist and like sculptures in the right place but not there. Each time I visit your monster seems to have grown longer. The lake without it looks natural but that monstrosity completely spoils it!! Sorry!!!

I visited Llandrindod Wells a couple of years ago, via the canal from Nantwich, and thought that the town was absolutely charming. You have one of the best butchers' shops in the UK. I'd not been to the area for about 35 years, and found that little had changed. Count your blessings.

Why can't the Christmas greeting sign, which welcomes people into Llandrindod from the Crossgates direction, be taken down for the rest of the year? It somehow negates the sincerity of the sign when it's there all year. I think there's another one at the opposite end of the town too.

Llandod is ok, but the council could put in a theme park ok somthin' that everyone decides on!

Llandrindod Wells is rubbish because there is nothing to do around here. I think that there should be things like an arcade, bowling alley, cinema and more things going on, then people would have alot more places to go.

Landod's ok. Not much to do really. Alright to grow up in but as you get older does get boring. Maybe introducing more stuff to do would improve Landod!?
