Llandrindod Wells

Last updated: 27 March 2006

Llandrindod Wells came into its own in the Victorian era when the railways brought hundreds of visitors to the Mid Wales spa town to sample its beneficial waters. Today, the town celebrates its links with the past by staging an annual Victorian Festival.

Take a closer look at the town from the comfort of your comuputer by clicking through our photo tour.

I lived in Llandrindod Wells all my life until I moved to West Midlands and loved it. As a child and a teenager I was never bored due to sporting, music, drama and other activities available. It is not true that there isn't things for young people to do, they just need to go out and look as there is plenty. I still enjoy my trips back and the fact the nothing changes. If you don't want a safe environment, picturesque secenery, good schooling, familiarity with everyone you see in town and a quiet lifestyle then I suggest you move.

You're right Andrew, I have checked and found the following info: "After a year of planning, the very first Victorian Festival took place in September 1982 and was opened by Earl and Lady Spencer".

We agree that this photo is not from the 1950s and have removed the date from the captions. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Judging by the typeface on the sign, the van and cars visible in the background, and the jeans and other clothes being worn by the men in the background, I'd put this last photo in the late70s-early 80s, or possibly even later.

This is the first I've heard of a Victorian Festival being held in the fifties, is this correct?

I don't mean to bring the mood down guys but as a student teacher in the area I'm left with the feeling of dread as the weekend approaches. Whilst it should be a time to relax and enjoy oneself I find it virtually impossible to do that around here.Where is there to go for a nice meal? What is there to do here? There are no shops! Builth isn't much better. What do Landodians do for fun?

We visit every summer, we love it, great scenery, fantastic environment, brilliant gift shop (porticus), also vans, but with 3 teenaged kids its sometimes difficult to keep them interested. Badly need cinema, decent leisure/sports centre, game shop says 12 yr old son, more cycling opportunities, as we keep going over to Elan. I'm afraid Llandoddies don't do it for us!

Open up the spa waters in the park and allow coaches down there in the summer for afternoon teas in the centre, move the health centre up town and let some live in the building to run the business of tea rooms and spa. Stop destroying trees for doddies , that tree was alive when it was mutilated think oxygen everytime you cut one down.

The image presented here of people always wandering around dressed as Victorians is ridiculous; a few people do this for a week once a year. You'll be describing the town as 'sleepy' next. Your captions need attention - 'A Llandrindod Wells street' is Middleton Street. The 'Town Park' is Temple Gardens. One of the good things about Llandod is the number of green spaces, - the common and the lake, the Rock Park walks and Shakey Bridge. We also try and be a town with modern facilities and appropriate 'watering holes'. By the way, disappointingly, it's a few years since there were boats on the Lake.

Thanks Jo. Captions now updated: Llandrindod Wells Photo Tour

We do have children living in Llandod. It would pleasant to see some of them included in the photographs. No mention of the springs, wells, etc. which gave rise to the the popularity of the town i n the 19th century. The waters and the readily available public toilets were the high spots of the town..the Lake made a convenient spot to end ones days !!!

My father knew Tom Norton at the Automobile Palace. I grew up in the area. Fascinated by Aircraft amongst Automobiles on the front of the building. Father remembered them organising air displays prewar. Whilst with my father Tom Norton talked with me about the bikes on display and said that he used to cycle to Aberystwyth and back in a day on his penny farthing cycle.

Used to drive through week after week in the sixties on route to Carmarthen. The only chance I had to look around was as and when I had a delivery in town. Always loved the look & atmosphere of the area and now at last have a chance to come back to spend some time and really look around.

You need to take an update photo of the lake! The largest public sculpture in UK is being launched, most of the pieces are already in place, the magnificent water beast's head and several coils. The leaping fish have been there some time and the tail will be completed very soon, it is a very exciting project, and looks fantastic! As a community project, it is most successful as hundreds of people have made parts which are being assembled by the visionary artist Richard Taylor. Do go and look at it again!
