Midweek Ramblers

A good walk towards Llandegle Rocks

Last updated: 21 April 2009

Chris Ottewell is the chairman of Llandrindod Wells Midweek Ramblers which has more than 50 members. In April 2009 he outlined the group's activities:

"The club was formed in the early nineties by Ira Compton, to encourage mostly retired residents of Llandrindod Wells and neighbouring villages that there was a way of keeping fit and enjoying the local countryside.

It now boasts a membership in excess of fifty, with an age range from the early sixties to the early eighties.

The club has a library of approximately 100 walks which are regularly updated by Chris Collins, one of our longer serving members. Prior to each walk the route is surveyed to ensure its safety and accessibility to members.

We meet every Wednesday at 10 a.m. come rain or shine at the Lake in Llandrindod Wells. We then car share and proceed to the prearranged start point to commence walking.

A programme of our walks is available at either the Library or the Tourist Information Office. Visitors to the area in and around Llandrindod Wells are always welcome to join us, and of course anyone who would like to take up membership.

It can be said without too much fear of contradiction that we rarely duplicate the walk more than every two years. These walks cover the whole of Powys and during the summer months we may venture to the coast or fields anew subject to the approval of the committee.

Our current Chairman Chris Ottewell is a registered blind person which highlights the fact that disability is certainly no excuse for the inability of enjoying the wonderful Welsh countryside.

We have two social functions a year , one we call the Christmas Pudding walk which recently have been held at the Lakeside restaurant and the other is our Annual Dinner, which is held in the spring.

Richard Williams, recently celebrated his eightieth birthday. Both he and his wife, Joan are regular walkers and attend in all weathers. Richard is the first of our members to reach eighty and closely followed by several other members.

We average over the year a weekly walk of six to seven miles with a group of between ten and thirty.
