Edgar Evans from Cwrt Newydd sang some 45 roles - most of them major ones - at The Royal Opera House at Covent Garden from 1946 to 1975. In that time, he sang more roles and more performances at the Opera House than any other artist. His biography was published in 2005. You can read an extract from Edgar's memoirs below.
Extract from 'Edgar Evans Extempore' by Robert Little.
"One year during the 1980s, Prince Charles and Princess Diana attended the Covent Garden Christmas party in the Crush Bar at the opera house. During the party, Prince Charles entertained the gathering by singing a song from one of the Gilbert and Sullivan operas. Afterwards, I met the Prince and said to him:'You're a bit croaky tonight!'
'Ah!Excuse me for that,'he replied. 'Very recently I fell off my polo pony and, as I landed, my stick caught my windpipe. What can I do?'
