Longwood Community Woodland
Last updated: 13 November 2007
Long Wood Community Woodland, a community co-operative, was formed in 2003 by a group of residents and representatives of the community councils in the Lampeter area. Philip Swain, chairman of the co-operative explains the group's objectives:
"2007 promises to see the transformation of Long Wood, a beautiful area of woodland, 300 acres in all, which extends along the boundary between the communities of Llangybi, Llanfair Clydogau and Lampeter.
Our aims from the start have been to conserve the ancient woodland, replacing conifers with local provenance broadleaf trees, and increase public awareness and use of the woodland. We have a ten year agreement to manage Long Wood jointly with Forestry Commission Wales.
Current projects are:
• Construction of a new bridleway, wildlife pond and car park which will improve public access and make recreational activities more enjoyable for local people
and visitors to the area.
• Creation of a viewing area with a log-cabin shelter and picnic tables.
• Forest School. We have been able to provide funding for the training of two leaders and one assistant for a permanent Forest School. Children from local schools are able to experience the woodland and learn in an outdoor setting
through games and activities such as constructing shelters, observing and identifying insects, plants, birds etc.
• Establishment of a tree nursery in the wood to provide native broadleaf trees for the on-going replanting.
• Erection of new interpretation panels to enable identification of the flora and fauna and provide information for visitors.
Long Wood is the first Community Woodland in Wales to have felled and marketed timber. This has provided employment for local people and a valuable source of timber for use by local businesses.
Selective thinning and clear-felling some areas of conifer has opened up the woodland and improved the view.
In the spring of 2007 the clear-fell areas will be replanted with up to 7,000 broadleaf trees, the majority being oak and the remainder being other species such as ash, wild cherry, alder, hazel and rowan. The new trees will encourage more diverse wildlife and plant species.
We hope to see more walkers, runners, horse riders and cyclists making full use of this wonderful, natural resource.
We meet on the first Monday in the month at Yr Hen Llysoedd, Lampeter at 7.30 pm. For more information or if you would like to become a member and be involved with any of our projects please contact:"

Great stuff !! As a family we get great pleasure from long wood. Woodlands are inspiring places where you can stretch your legs, fill your lungs & share a nod and a smile with some other friendly faces. Longwood is also first class mountain biking territory. Thanks to all who made it happen.

Congratulations on your efforts. As a retired arboriculturist I take an interest in such endeavours. If I can be of any help, let me know.
