I was at Lampeter Uni from 75 -78 and still remember the starry clear skies, the hot chocolate from Contis and the egg and bacon sandwiches from the cafe near the library. As for the drinking...do people still walk the pipe instead of the bridge on their way back from the bar?

I think this may sum it up when I say I know a lot of the people who have written some of the above comments. There is no place like Lampeter simple as. I recommend enroling on a course and finding out for yourself, the Uni could do with it. Look out for a tall man with cropped hair and an earing, he can tell you some stories!!!

Loved it, loved it, loved it. Was an undergraduate there 1992-1995. I went on the new entrant's conference (3 days) and knew as soon as we arrived on the bus this was the place for me. Spent without doubt the best three years of my life there, have spent the rest of my life missing it and dreaming of getting back (when I put it like that, that's rather sad...!)Should never have done my MA at Royal Holloway (I lived at home - cheaper). Spent the following year driving my parents nuts with wails of 'I miss Lampy!Word of advice; if you like it that much, stay there. Anybody willing to help fund an Ancient History PhD?! :-)

I was a student at SDUC from 1990-1993. Great place with a lovely community feeling! I loved the place. Loads of great memories and made many good friends. I lived overlooking magic mountain in Walker Hall for a couple of years! Great too, in the snow with the walk up to Falcondale lake!

Graduated in 1984 but seems like yesterday! Yes, Lampeter is a very special place and it's good to see from reading the comments from far more recent students, it continues to be so. Can't believe how things have changed though!! Takeaways?? Nightclubs?? We had disco's at the Dalis Bar twice a week!! And the pubs were closed on a Sunday and had to walk to Cwmann if we wanted a drink. Our idea of an after hours takeaway was scraping enough change between us to visit the Conti's chocolate machine! Just reading these comments makes me smile - oh to be young again!

Although my time at SDUC, Lampeter (1983 - 1987) is long since passed I still have incredibly fond memories of the place. I remember reading that it wuold give me an education in life with a degree thrown in, very true. It is unique

from the moment i arrived in lampeter i fell in love with it, everything about the place is great. If you make a genuine effort with the locals they are charming and friendly. The shops, the surrounding countryside and of course the university are just wonderful in a world that that is changing for the worst. I left Lampeter three years ago, i return as often as i can. When i am away from this beautiful place i ache and have Lampeter constanly on my mind and in my heart. Lampeter has made a life long impression on me and will be in my heart for the rest of my life, i thank Lampeter and its people for its kindness, to Dai,s caff and Contie,s too. I hope Lampeter goes on and will not be spoilt with developments, a little peice of heaven really does exist on earth.

I miss magic mountain and the hill fort, driving round the lanes to Blaenpennal, rainy weekends and Station Terrace. I can't help feeling I left a part of myself behind when I left, and whenever I go back I feel so comforted. It has been 15 years since I graduated, and I still miss it all so much.

I started at SDUC in October 1974 and met my husband in Freshers Week. We have just celebrated our 30th Wedding Anniversary! Do other Lampeter students still dream about long wet Sunday afternoons, trailing past closed pubs and shops in order to enjoy company and a frothy coffee in a steamed-up-windowed Conti's, before Joyce's dried up pastie and beans, and a wild night at the Film Club? Happy Days! I so envy those who are lucky enough to be there now. I hope they appreciate it!

Went and did my degree there and my school thought I was mad to choose Lampeter instead of the more well known colleges. After going on an open day though I knew it was fr me. I loved the peace and the tranquility of the surrounding country, the town was mostly very friendly and the standard of teaching from the lecturers wasa first class. I have not been bck since I left in 1999 because of the distance from home but I will have to redress that soon.

I loved the place so much I ended up living there for 7 years. I had the best (and some of the worst) times of my life in Lampeter and I wouldn' t change a thing purely because it is a place that once you cross the bridge into the town you feel you are home.

So many responses about a small Welsh market town just shows what a special place it is! Went there grudgingly and sent ten years doing 3 degrees - no better place to start an academic life.

If you were not a 'character' before you went to Lampeter (College)then you were by the end. It is the most beautiful place one earth (when the sun shines) but a bit desolate when it rains...and it can rain. In the first term it rained, then flooded and loads of city folk left because they thought that was all that Lampeter had to offer weatherwise! Lampeter could be dreary if it weren't for the people. It is a beautiful place, I miss the people, evensong in chapel, the quieter pace...Getting married in the chapel... so I've still got an old Lampeter friend with me!!Lampeter gets ! into you and becomes part of the fabric of you. Going back is never the same and probably not a good idea but we love Lampeter and can't quite believe that it's been nearly 20 years since we left.

Almost impossible to believe that it's now more than 25 years since I left Lampeter. But the memories are still as sharp and nostalgic as ever. Just waded through all the Llanbed euphoria and felt nostalgic. Now why is that? especially as I've settled just 30 miles away!An unique place with a therapeitic atmosphere. When I was a student there someone summed it up,'At other universities people rush to lectures, here we walk calmly, taking in the scenery.'

Oh to come back and rust to death! I hated the cold and the rain, but would exchange the heat for the hallowed halls and streets of Lambed; to walk again in the soggy hills; and to sing in the Camanfa Ganu; and the Eisteddfodau; and practise the Welsh I have forgotten, and to renew acquaintanceship with all things Welsh. But with no money, and no opportunities, I dream on, with the fondest of memories of getting my degree as a grandmother; of seeing my daughter married in the chapel; of singing evensong in the chapel in spite of titters from well meaning Irish friends; and of living in the valleys in the mud, frost and rain - ah, if only. Just a huge touch of hiraeth really! One Lottery win and I am out of here -

I graduated from Lampeter in 07. I miss it incredibly. I never thought I would. I miss Hags, the butchers, nehar, the bagel shop, steaks from the Royal Oak. I miss seeing the hills every day. I even miss the rain. At night you could see the stars so clearly, it was incredible. I miss the hillfort. I miss my lecturers, too. *sigh*

My Dad had the good fortune to be stationed by the US Army at High Meade during the early part of WWII. He met my Mother in Lampeter at a dance and after their marriage in Soar, it was my turn to have the good fortune to be born in the Pleasant Hill Cottages in North Road in 1945. I was brought (involuntarily, I might add)to New Jersey the next year, but more than 30 visits to Lampeter during my lifetime has convinced me that I never really left town! Memories of things long gone are fresh, still. The train ride to Aberaeron, the train ride from Carmarthen. Swings on the hill behind the Pleasant hill cottages. Pop fresh from the bottling line at the Old Quarry Bottling plant my grandparents owned. Salmon fishing in the Teifi. The market full of animals and traders. Playing "pick up" games of cricket on what is now the rugby pitch in North Road. Sweets from Hefin at Siop Fach to keep me quiet. The smell of soft coal smoke and new mown hay. Yup, it's a pretty easy place to love.

I miss everything about Lampeter, the surrounding countryside is amazing to walk through, the whole attitude towards life is much more relaxed (apart from when there was an essay due in the next day!) I spent one of my summers learning Welsh at Cwrs Wlpan (led by Chris Rees). Our local was the Castle Green (the sign of which translated as The Green Castle); Glyn soon put that right Lots of lockins there, too. Best thing was being able to practice the Welsh language in the streets.

I went to secondary school in Lampeter and worked at the Travel House until 1999. I always thought the grass was greener elsewhere and wished we had the bowling alleys/cinemas/places to go that were so out of reach from little Lampeter. We still had a great time doing other things like drama groups, guides and Llanwnnen youth club. I appreciate going 'home' now that I don't live there! (My parents are living in Maesycrugiau) and I still enjoy meeting old friends in the Castle/Black/Bush etc. You should try doing a 'Power-hour'! The Shapla remains my fave Indian restaurant and I still use the opticians in town as well!!

It's been a year now since I walked the streets in LLanbedr and oh how I miss it. I miss conti's ice cream and cawl (once saw a vegie come in and ask for something without meat and someone shouts "get the cawl", "whats that" came the reply, "A sort of lamb stew" returned the answer. "lamb stew"! "But that's meat"! said the vegie in total disgust. "not here darling" Was the cheeky reply. Oh how we all laughed (excpet Mr conti).
And the best fish and chips in Wales from the award winners.
And the coop. Friendly people like shop people ought to be.
Stephan's vets where the animal comes first, not the bill.
Cattle mart day, when even I looked dressed up.

And as for the pubs - don't get me started!!!!!!!!

Lampeter is great because you can be what ever you want to be. In some places it can be hard to be that because you get large cliches of people which vary in age and lifestyle that are always around passing judgement on you. That doesn't happen here. Mainly because there aren't enough people to gather large groups! That's the good thing though. As a student, you end up at least knowing the name of most people even if you're not a mate of theirs. The townsfolk are the same. They all know each other and it's rare to walk down a street, even in the rain, and not find at least 10 people having conversations across the road. It's idyllic. Country life at its best. Long may it continue, unscarred by the rest of the country.

Hi guys,
having heard so much positive about it, I am seriously wondering now: where should I go to uni: Lampeter or Glamorgan? See, I just want to get my final year done asap as well as getting hammered once in a while, and, almost forgot, important, too: need a part-time job - any chance of that in Lampeter?
Appreciate your replies,

Having read all the above, I am now completely homesick. One day I will come home to Llanbed to stay, I've been away such a long time. Anyone remember drinking rum and black in the Castle Green, or a game at the 'stute, Williams chip shop, Jones the milk's milk cart, Friday fish van, the bi-weekly mart, running wild in the college grounds! The old haystack and the wishing well, swimming in the Teifi, walks in Five Fields, Falkendale lake and the woods, the tip! Meeting the train for the Wednesday fish box. So many towny memories.

There is a place in my heart and mind that I keep, a special place that I visit not often enough. I was born and raised in Lampeter up to the age of 13. I have very fond memories as a child playing on the railway, or fishing in the Teifi river, caught my first trout there. My first childhood sweetheart at Ffynonbedr School. Some sad memories too. But above all I think The Small Bakers shop opposite the stone monolith right in the centre of the town makes the second best Welshcakes in the land, second only to those my Gran used to make. Centre of my universe - Llanbedr pont steffan.

I've lived in Lampeter all my life and to be honest it isnt that bad, although it doesn't have that many shops it is very near to big shopping towns like Carmarthen and Aberystwyth. Also it has many very talented local band like Java and Ned Ludd - make sure if you have the chance to go to one of their gigs you go as it's a brilliant experiance. Also Radio Luxembourg from Aberystwyth are AMAZING! so you got to go and see them.

My goodness, I miss this town. You really never can quite manage to leave Lampeter; something of the atmosphere stays in your heart even years after leaving. I miss the friendly and supportive learning environment fostered by the lecturers; I miss the Cwmann Tavern; I miss the otters playing in the Dulas in front of the student union building.
I feel so privileged to have spent three years studying in the midst of those hills, in a place where time feels as though it’s stood still for generations. And from a pollution-ridden central London job, I wish I could go and do it all over again.

As an anarchist from Cuba I recall some of the wildest parties on the planet took place in Lampeter in the 1960s and 1970s. I gather you can even see a live play based on one. Dic Edwards' Franco's Bastard? Is it in Welsh? Is Lampeter still like that? The women of the town and of the university were certainly very beautiful. Or was it just the rain? And Cayo Evans played a mean accordion. I still have my cap emblazoned with the insignia of the White Eagles of Snowdon! Is Dave Bardsley still in hiding? And who is in Frankie Newte's tower now?

Lampeter is a great community to live in for both the young and the old. Although there may not be hundreds of jobs around, it's a good place to study and make friends.

Lampeter rocks! Summer uni in Lampeter was the best time I've had in a long time, I made so many friends some I still see remenisce about the time we had last summer. Can't wait to go back for my first year in a few months. If you don't like sheep this place is not for u.

Ian Barrs, Hampshire - and Lampeter!
I spent 4 years at UWL as an Undergrad, and now have come back after 2 years for another year as a post-grad. If you can't live without the bright lights and the nightclubs, Lampeter isn't for you. But if you're a student looking for somewhere friendly, quirky and beautiful - come to Lampeter! I made more friends in my first 6 months here than the previous 6 years. You can get to know people, the town and the university really quickly and feel at home within a term. (so at home that quite a few people never leave!). Its a real community, town and gown.
As for the "but what do you do in Lampeter?"... well, if you make the smallest effort, and are prepared to try new and crazy things, very soon your problem will be finding time for academic work, a job or whatever else you're supposed to be doing:-).
have a drink in the Cwamne Tavern on a Thursday or Saturday night...;-)

I've made some of the best friends I've ever had here, and everyone makes you feel at home. The lecturers don't put pressure on you, the locals are friendly and the culture is fantastic. I feel home sick for lampy when I return to Newcastle.

This place has it's ups and downs. The best being that you get to meet and mix with people of totally different backgrounds - you certainly get to make some firm friendships here. The down side is that it can take you half and hour to make a five minute trip to Somerfield because of all the people stopping to chat in the street!

Louise Towner, from Lampeter
Being a local gal myself and coming to Lampeter to study was a grand move. At first I thought 'why am I studying here?' but now I think about it and now I have graduated, I can't think of a better place to take 3 years out to go to uni. The people I have met here are wonderful each and every one of them. Some people may look and think 'where is the Woolworths?' why do you need one when a shop selling everything you need is here in Lampeter. Also some places may seem far away from Lampeter (or even campus) but they are not. Lampeter is a grand place and for anyone looking for something different from the norm' Lampeter will very much change your perspective. Lampeter - a university for everyone.

I spent the war years in Lampeter, they were happy years, went to school. I still have family living in the area and do visit when in the country - a great town.

I lived, studied and worked in Lampeter for four years and it was an amazing experience. For someone who came all the way from Lisbon, Portugal, Lampeter was welcoming from the first day on and has won a special place in my heart. Lost in the middle of nowhere, it has a special aura, and people seem truly happy and friendly there. Contemplate the sheep and talk to the quirky local characters, Lampeter is worth visiting!!! I wish I was there still!... have a beer in the Kings Head, and you will not feel like a stranger.

I have lived in the area for many years, and I totally agree with all the comments that have been placed, that Lampeter is a great place to live and a good way of meeting new friends if you are sport minded is to join the local rugby or soccer clubs. With them you recieve a good welcome and will have a good night out.

Lampeter is a truly great town. It has the best rugby club and local community in the World. I lived there for 23 years until I moved to Cardiff to find work. My friends and family still live there and I return as often as I can. Go to the Ivy Bush on the square for a good night out.

As another hot Summer progresses here in Los Angeles, my thoughts turn to Lampeter and the wonderful time I had there in 1991 on Cwrs Wlpan, the intensive Summer course in Welsh presumably still offered by Coleg Prifysgol Dewi Sant - Saint David's University College in Lampeter.
Lampeter is a wonderful place. I miss the many Welsh walks that my friends and I embarked upon there. Can't wait to return one day - real trees with real rivers, streams running through the college campus, and sheep on the hillside. Try to purchase that in Los Angeles!
Lampeter, I shall return one day! Diolch am yr atgofion!

Conti's Ice Cream is, quite literally, the nicest ice cream I've ever tasted. Last time I trekked West I made a special visit to Lampeter on a Sunday afternoon just to get one of their legendary 99's. Unfortunately the cafe was closed which was quite a blow - I had to head to that place in Aberaeron which sells ice cream made from bees or something. Which was fine but not remotely as nice.

Many people have compared Lampy to town in the Prisoner, you can't escape! The town is full of ex-students who just can't leave. It is so well loved by everyone that no one wants to leave.

We lived in Ffaldybrenin for 18 years and Lampeter was our local town and we loved every moment of our lives there, a town so laid back it was horizontal, we now live in New Zealand but have the fondest and most endearing memories of Lampeter and Wales.

I have lived in many places in the UK and Lampeter beats the lot for helpful, polite and friendly people. All the shop staff are so helpful even if you don't buy anything. The most impressive thing is the Medical Centre and the fantastic staff, from reception, nurses to doctors.

Lampeter played an important part of my life. The people were, are and probably always will be, fantastic. Great deals at the local Pio,(Pioneer Supermarket) Celebration Cups at Conti's Cafe, Kings Head meals, pasties from the Spar and Cheesy nights at the S.U. bar. Lampeter - Small, but perfectly formed

The great thing about Lampeter University is that there are loads of small groups of students which keeps it really diverse. Within three to four weeks of being here you know nearly every student!

Even though the town’s small it’s got all the shops you need. It’s good not having too many shops because you don’t spend too much money that way. I feel really safe here, as well.
